Hi my wife and I visited the Costa calida for the first time last week, a short 3 day trip to look at the area and some properties with a view to buy initially as a holiday home. While having coffee on beach front tables at the beach bar cafe, just a few hours before our flight home my wife's handbag was stolen. Lost money, cards, passports, car keys for our car parked at stansted, nightmare. Bag was on the floor between our two chairs. The cafe was very quiet, but someone took it almost before our eyes, while we were no doubt enjoying the beautiful view. We finally got home 3 days late after a trip to British consulate in Alicante to get emergency passports (super efficient).

A very unpleasant experience but one which has not put us off, we loved the area it's birdwatching and fishing opportunities and the properties we saw. We are just catching are breath and hope to start the process of buying in lo pagan.

So please beware, like anywhere bags can be stolen, I know my wife will have a very eagle eye on hers from now on. Also we will now keep a record of our passport number separate and all our passwords etc.

Anyway, if there are any keen fishermen or birdwatchers in the area we would be glad to meet you and share experiences.

Sorry to hear this but it's well known that bags are not safe on the floor or on backs of chairs or on the table (anywhere you go - Not just Spain) The only safe place is using a cross over body bag and keeping it on your lap with the strap still across the body. It's so easy to be distracted while eating or drinking in a bar and these thieves know that !

Also keep copies on your computer of all documents like passport,  driving license etc. Also if you send the copies to yourself on an email using an account like Gmail which is accessible from any computer, while travelling, even if you lose your phone, then you will always have copies on hand.

Please to hear the process was easy getting new passports. At least the travel insurances pay for all that.

We are also sorry and frustrated to read of your theft in Lo Pagan, there are opportunists everywhere.

We are also pleased to read it has not put you off, it’s a beautiful area and we hope you get to enjoy it more as soon as possible.

It’s sad to say don’t trust anyone, more to be aware of the surroundings and security, even at home.

Perhaps use Dropbox to keep information that can be used anywhere.

Sorry to hear this BrianSue, glad it hasn't put you off buying in the area. We're just up the road in La Ribera. I always wear a cross body bag. You can never be too careful, especially in cafes and markets.

I had my purse taken out of my bag at El Ray's  in Balsicas. The bag was hung on my chair with the zipper closed. I am astounded as to how they got it. I paid for my meal  put my purse in my bag and closed  my bag. Be aware of how easily this  can happen
