Great points but must agree that see little improvement in the near future maybe years and encouraging visitors to a resort with no beach affected water and many more problems seems senseless, it would be best that the next few years a massive cleanup is put in place and when completed advertise the fact that it is then open for business and hopefully visitors will return. with regard to local businesses and bars doing better than before ?? Talking it up does not put money in till or pay staff We owned a business and like many others watched it go down until we could not afford to wait for the upturn, so we and many friends closed and hope that others may survive. We have been here for 18 years and do not want to live elsewhere but also do not want people encouraged to holiday here when it is not the right time

Let’s all push together for the upturn but do not pretend it’s here or even near I believe it will be a minimum of 2 years, one agreement the closure of san javier was a massive mistake as far as LA is concerned corvera is a white elephant and will cost many millions before it’s found to be financially viable

I agree about San Javier.

Its good for Murcia, and in time the connections will grow, but right now bad for LA.

There really are businesses which are doing better, because of the tradies arriving, and definitely winter will be stronger than usual because of the big number of people needed to make repairs. Business depending just on tourists will struggle.

This next year the algal bloom will be severe. I do agree that information must be factual and cleaner water is the key. Hopefully, the National government will weigh in, with the Eu and actually increase the non-agricultural buffer etc.

It will survive and flourish, we bought and we’re coming all the way from Canada.  Our winters will be spent enjoying the sunshine and the hospitality of the Spanish people.  We couldn’t be happier and have no reservations given what was mentioned in the original post.  We were there in September during the Gota fria and saw first hand what resilience looks like.  Think positive.......it’s contagious😊

You have a property but a holiday maker given false information about the relevant available facilities will be dissapointed and will never return truthful info must be given so when they do come it is inviting

With regard to contagious take a walk down the beach that’s reality not dreams of yesterday

My God there are some pessimistic, grumpy people on here! Yes the Gota Fria was severe but I have been amazed how quickly LA has recovered, thanks to local people and the local government, if this was the UK they would still be talking about it and doing risk assessments!

The beach is still bad but the rest of the town has few scars and the 525 square seems as busy as ever, repair work goes on at pace and by Easter I expect most repair work will be complete.

The Gota Fria was a natural disaster but not on the scale of a tropical hurricane so please get the issues into perspective.

As for the new airport its far better than San Javier and LA is closer to Corvera than Benidorm is from Alicante so to be honest it's not an issue.

Don't talk your local town down, we all know the problems but many Mediterranean resorts have issues (look up the problems at La Zenia) and help make LA a better place rather than moan from the sidelines.

Why not join the litter pickers every other Sunday for a start and help improve your area.

Sorry about the rant.

Everything will recover thanks to the resilience of the people, except the water quality that has been declining for years. There are business that rely on tourism and, unless successive governments address this, tourism will suffer.

Agreed, the Murcia government needs to decide what is more important tourism and the housing market or farming?

The answer is obvious but I am not sure the will is there to shut down wet farming.

The proposal to ban wet farming on the Mar Menor side of the AP7 is a good compromise with farmers affected encouraged to grow tree and type based crops.

I asked the original question to just see what people thought - interestingly the response has been a mix of deniers, dreamers and realists.

Time will tell, but personally I think it will survive, but certainly for many years not prosper. I am encouraged by the protests in Cartagena, proving that a lot of people understand that action is long overdue, and saddened that so many think that talking about the problems is a bad thing.

The Airrport closure I feel has had the biggest impact on the area, summer last year was definitely quieter more so in winter, you could get a taxi from the airport for around 15euros and that would take you to a property of your desire. Now it’s 50euros? Not everyone wants to hire a car, so they fly into Alicante where there is more local availability.

Corvera Airport isn’t doing its self any favours, the flights from Manchester are now almost always more expensive than Alicante, so I do feel the airport closure has driven people away.

I now fly into Alicante and don’t use Corvera, as the car hire is also more expensive. I’m sure the beaches will be ready for the warmer weather, and summer will be fine.

But yes let’s stay optimistic and look into the future, but they need to get their fingers out to stop the flooding, especially for the locals, they deserve better, pity there isn’t a funding system so people can donate, as long as it goes direct to the local community’s.
