No of course you don't have to be a resident to buy a property in Spain but if you are not a resident and you are a UK citizen, then your use of it will be limited to 90 days in every 180 on a rolling basis.

I am an irish citizen

A difference to what?

As an Irish citizen you still don’t need residency to buy a property....

As an Irish citizen, you would still be expected to follow the law of the land and become a legal resident once you are living in Spain for 3 months...

Ok thanks, I emailed an estate agent in Spain and he told me as I was an EU resident I didn't need to get residency in Spain. Obviously I won't be using him for any purchase there lol

Hi Trish....I doubled checked your original post just to make sure that I read correctly you want to relocate to live in Spain....so you should arrange residency after living here 3 months....what the estate agent said is doable too....people did live/live here without residency, and with Brexit we saw UK citizens scramble to gain residency before the end of last year.....it’s up to you....but for now you can get on with finding your next new home and decide on residency afterwards.....good luck with your house hunting....

At the moment, those figures sound about right. I would recommend you speak with a solicitor with regards to applying for residency.

As I understand it post Brexit and the end of the Transition Period you will need a Visa from the Spanish Consulate first, and then you will need to apply for Residencia within a month of arrival on the Visa. That is if you are a UK citizen. If you have a European passport then you don’t need Visa and probably not Residencia or other third country citizen requirements.

You should speak to the Spanish Consulate where you are, about applications for a Visa - each person requires a Visa. Also medical insurance and to meet the new income requirements for the Visa.

Not sure what paperwork you have for Portugal and if you have any whether this can be used for what you need in Spain but no doubt the Spanish Consulate will confirm for you. Suggest in any event that you will need all your paperwork for the Visa and it could take awhile to get the Visa even if you qualify - but you will need it before you can make a Residencia Application!

Thank you all for the information regarding re locating to Spain from Portugal.
