A historic change
For more than 10 years, I have lived within 100 metres of the Rambla, in the centre of Los Alcazares. Any time there was more than 25mm (an inch) of rain, the Rambla heavily ran with brown water, you could see the muddy fan that stained the Mar Menor—top soil from the campo to the west of the town. I
n the last week, the campo has had I am told, at least 140mm of rain. But a historic change, practically no water in the Rambla and no mud in the Mar Menor. The major diversionary works done by the Ayuntamientos de Los Alcazares and Torre Pacheco have clearly been successful.
Of course, the water has to go somewhere. The Rambla Albujón to the south is running at record levels, spewing muddy water into the Mar Menor.
Now, the challenge for governments at every level is to treat water on a massive scale during these major rain events.
