Evening All

We're a family of 3, me (47), my wife (42) and our daughter (10) and we're investigating moving to Spain in around 12 to 18 months.  We've just came back from a trip to the Murcia region and the south east coast and we're returning this autumn and coming out again for around 6 weeks next summer, the idea has been to investigate the coast of the south east at all times of the year and check we're happy with the environment, the weather and to find somewhere to live...

The reason for my post is I'm keen to speak to anybody of a similar age who has made the leap to Spain and specifically how they find the schooling situation, making new friends and generally if the move has worked out for them.

A little bit of background on us as a family, we both work remotely and have recently sold a business meaning we're very fortunate in that we can retire and having work isn't an issue.  We've all been learning Spanish for around 18 months and are generally outgoing friendly people.  My wife has applied and expects to receive an Irish passport soon (it's been an 8 month wait!) so hopefully that will make the move simpler.

We're not looking for a move to a golf resort as we don't think it'll be for us as we want more Spanish culture than northern European.  We're also very keen for our daughter to get the best education she can...  We're currently focusing on Los Alcazares mainly for its location to La Torre golf resort and its school, its beach and amenities.

Reasons for moving are likely the same as everyone else from the UK, we're sick of living in thick coats for 6 months of the year and having to deal with all the other problems the UK has, we've had enough and firmly believe there is a better life out there for us.

That's about it at the moment, hopefully someone can jump in and help.

Adios!

That all makes sense, but 10 is a bit of a difficult age, education wise, is the plan the Spanish school system or British school?

Hi Greg

Plan is British school, I believe the school at la Torre is Spanish and English?

Cheers

Hi, sounds like you are doing all the right things and doing your planning well in advance. We also are looking at moving over to Los Alcazares in a couple of years, our kids are older so we are just waiting to get them through college. We visit LA every year for a month in the summer and have also been there in January and February previously. We love it there and find there is a really good mix of tourists/residents, it doesn't get as busy/packed as other areas in the summer and also tends to be busier than other areas in the winter months. The weather always seems to be as good if not better than anywhere else in Spain (I'm always checking it during the dour winter months here in Ireland!!). There is always lots to do also in LA and has always seemed to us quite an easy place to meet people. When we go there for the summer we look at it as if we are living there, so there are great grocery shop options, all the chains are there and eating out is reasonable and available activities are plentiful. I have no idea about the school situation as it's not something that's relevant to us. The best advice I always see here on moving to Spain, is to rent for 6+ months in the area first to make sure you like it rather than purchasing and regretting later. I wish you the best of luck with it and would certainly be interested to see how you get on and where you choose to live.
