I need help to find how to relocate my 9 year old Dachshund when I am planning to retire to the Los Alcazares area later this year.   I am concerned that my enquiries to date have proved unsuccessful. My little buddy does not cope well with being separated from me.

Any advice from expats who have been through this process would be appreciated. He has his passport etc. but I am at a loss how to get him to Spain.

Drive is the best way, he will be with you all the time,

It may not be the cheapest, but best and cheapest are different things

Many thanks for your message.  I feel driving will be least stressful for both the little guy and myself. Just dont know how to go about this as private transporters are very expensive. As will be only person travelling I dont feel confident enough to do the journey as an unaccompanied female. There will be something to suit our needs. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your reply. My problem is that I just dont know what is best option for my dachsie as he wouldnt cope well with being in the hold of an aircraft. I havent been able to find any UK airline that allows small dogs to travel in the cabin.

Driving seems best way for him but I will be travelling alone and the journey is just too daunting as a single female.  There will be something out there to suit our needs.  Thanks again.

Hi my Bichon has separation issues now as I sent her by road and it took three days and now I can not leave her. I am flying her back to the UK now because it will only be 3 hours in the hold. So I hope this will be best.

Hi I drove over with my elderly cat she was 17 but anyone would have thought of her as a seasoned traveler. I lost her last June but never regretted bringing her.

Now driving through France and down is a very long ride.

Brittany Ferries you have to book well in advance but you have a pet friendly cabin, a walk area, they even give you a gift of a collapsible water bowl, treats and a toy. Only time you have a problem is if you go to the restaurant and you leave your baby for an hour. But even that is not a problem if they are settled.

It is a very stress less option as you are onboard for 24 hours but sailing now is much smoother than it used to be. I did Portsmouth Bilbao lovely drive down with a need to stop off at a pet friendly hotel for one night.

Or as someone suggested drive down behind them.

Good luck and I hope your baby enjoys the trip

Hi Lin. Many thanks for your really helpful info!  So sorry to hear that you lost your Furry Friend. Its like losing a family member. We took in a wonderful elderly Staffie a couple of years ago as his owner was terminally ill in hospital with noone to give a forever home to 11 year old Spencer. He was a wonderful boy but died 6 months later due to sudden heart attack at home. Even after such a short time with us (and Dachsie Dave and 3 cats) we have some wonderful and hilarious memories of him.    The trip by ferry sounds encouraging and I will definitely be looking into it once my house is sold and I have more definite idea of dates when will be travelling.  The idea of putting him in the hold of an aircraft just fills me with horror!  My son says Dave would have to be surgically removed from me!!!   Its good to talk to someone who has undertaken this journey.  Again thank you so much for taking the trouble to send a message.  Very best wishes Susan   X
