MMy new fibre optic broadband should be up to 200Mbps but is currently typically between 30 and 50 with a single incidence of 76. Before I go back to the supplier, has anyone else had differing results?

Be careful that whatever platform you are using to test the speed is capable of reading high speeds. If I test mine on this old laptop (Windows10) I get 46 Mbps download, 49 Mbps upload. My 8th generation iPad gives 449 Mbps down & 387 Mbps up - both using wifi connection.

Thanks Peter.

I am running an App called Speedtest on my Samsung S7 phone. It seemed reasonably believable reporting on the 25Mbps system I had before where download speeds were well in the teens.

Speed tests can be misleading, many mobile phones only operate at 100mB max, as do many older computers, latest generation will operate WIFI at 300-500, while ethernet to computer can be 600mB. So last of these will be the only one which gives you accurate reading.

If you really are concerned try downloading a file of a known size and time it.

I have now found the problem. My phone was not connected to the 5G internet option. The speed test is now showing over 400 (fibre is advertised at 600) so I am happy.

I get 600Mbps with Telecable. Their “fibre guru” Alejandro speaks good English, and is certainly enthusiastic....having suffered tv & internet through Avatel via Wimax it was a joy to have no breaks during the recent heavy rain & wind!
