a word of warning; I live here in Spain and rent cars every month.  I recently rented through DoYouSpain.com (who incidentally always give the best prices ) and the agent was Interrent/Europcar.  I have not rented from them in the past.  I took out the DoYouSpain excess insurance for €85.  thinking I had a great deal I turned up at the desk.  was told my insurance wasnt good enough and then sold another insurance for €238.  then I had to pay €93 - which will be refunded when I take the car back and another separate €300 for a 'deposit' which will also be refunded.  I had to sign various forms one of which had a diagram of where any scratches were on the car (never done that before)  in fact on one occasion having rented from Goldcar I told them there were scratches on the car and they said we're a rental company, I refused to drive round in a scratched car and they gave me another.

I emailed Europcar several times complaining about being ripped off for this extra insufdance and of course no even the courtesy of a reply.  So I've just spoken with someone in the UK Interrent offices who did actually apologise to me and said I was certainly mis-sold the extra insurance! but of course he couldnt refund that for me!

so just wanted to let you know that should you be renting a car here in Spain and you take (or have your own ) insurance don't be sold on their insurance.

I think it's awful that companies are ripping off  people just to make an extra buck.   whateer happened to customer service?

You have been warned!

This has been going on for a few years now, I take out my own insurance for abroad, it's the same as the 85 you paid, but you do have to put a deposit of 1000 euros from a credit card, this is refunded when you take the car back and there's no new scratches, be though when you pick the car up. If they did keep the money you can reclaim it back from your English insurance, I use questor and it works exactly like the do you spain one but is half the price, it's also better to get full to full petrol if you can as your ripped of with that too

Been there and done that(over past 12yrs) and always same, the hire charge is so competetive, they have to get extra money somehow. I am in Spain at moment and only paid £86 for a whole month of carhire(full to full too)I always refuse extra insurance as I have" icarhire" excess insurance and having made a claim some years ago I couldnt recommend them any higher. They were brilliant, had my costs refunded within 2wks and so easy to deal with. The cost- £39 yr and if I put my hubby on my rental as a named driver he's covered too, so am I if I,m a passenger in any hire care. I use Autoeurope to hire my car through as I prefer them to doyouspain, but I constantly review the prices and cancel/rebook if it goes cheaper.

Hi please please everybody...... don't get ripped off with car hire insurance, this is what to do.....

You take out hire car insurance for Spain in the UK.......

Costs no more than £40 for a year. You just tell the company in Spain you have your own insurance and don't want there's under any circumstances ..don't be bullied!

I hire a car for no more than £130 for 2 weeks and that's it apart from fuel......

Savvy up you people don't get ripped off😎

Lorraine,

I replied earlier (somewhat lengthy), telling you I insure with "icarhire" excess insurance which is the best company I have found for their cover conditions and they paid me out quick too.

Agree with all those here. I've bought my own for many years now and just insured with insurance 4 hire cars, which is underwritten by big companies.  Surely it can't be long before the frighteners of huge excess are regulated. I took Enterprise in the UK to task on behalf of a foreign visitor, who hadn't listened.

You have been warned!

I've found this topic very interesting and useful. I made my 1st of many visits to Spain in February and needed to hire a car . I was advised by a friend in the UK to purchase excess insurance (£39.99 per year) and he warned me about the bullying tactics I will encounter by the car hire companies to purchase their extra insurance. I arranged car hire with goldcar and was pressured into purchasing additional insurance because they confused me and convinced me that I hadn't  got adequate insurance. My inexperience cost me an additional 76€ for 3 day car hire. So thanks for the advice and I take comfort knowing that I won't be using goldcar again and they will lose out long term from my many visits in the near future ☺
