The dreaded car damage charge

I just thought I would post this as a reminder and warning to others. 

My friend returned recently from Alicante to discover that she had been charged for damage to her hire car. There was 'supposedly' a dent on the side of the car which 'they claim' was sustained during the hire period.

My friend is contesting this claim at present but is not too hopeful of a positive outcome.

I always do a full video of the car before and after the hire period and make sure 'where possible' that the car hire people see me doing so.

Apologies in advance if I am preaching to the choir here but my friend was unaware of this and has said they will certainly be taking a video of any future hire cars.

It’s terrible when this happens. Like you we video and take pictures of the car.

For approximately €/£50 an annual hire car insurance is a good investment, because in the event anything like this does happen it’s over to the insurance company to contest or pay up and for frequent travellers/hirer it’s money we’ll spent.

I agree with you. Certain hire car companies like to do this and we also make a full video inspection of the vehicle before getting into it. We also took out a relatively cheap annual insurance to cover any "extras" claims and did have to claim on it in Mallorca, when a dent in the roof of the car (which we hadn't done, nor photographed) was claimed by the company. The claim was covered by this insurance and more than covered the cost of the policy itself.

On our return in October we were charged we had taken photos but unfortunately the wing mirror photo was at an angle so couldnt make photo out so got Charged for that.The registration plate could clearly make out on photos when we picked car up it was hanging to one side so they accepted that.That was Gold Car.

She is also still waiting ( 8 weeks now) for her fuel refund as it was a full for full deal.

I know times are hard but why take the chance of losing future business for a few Euros now? 

The bad news for Gold car is that she is due back over this month so I do not think she will miss them and hit the wall.

Perhaps she would consider buying an annual hire car insurance policy…..good investment if for nothing else it takes the stress out of car hire.

Gold Car are notorious! Their lousy reputation goes before them... give them a wide berth in future.

It happened to me using Goldcar. I was lucky enough to be able to claim back through my credit card company as I had proof in a video that there was no damage upon return. I was lucky…… The common denominator here is DO NOT use Goldcar and tell everyone the same. Hopefully if word gets around they will get the message.

Gold car are notorious for trying to fleece customers who won't buy Thier excess insurance. It's often dearer than the hire cost which is always cheap to draw punters to it. My advice pay more at Avis or Budget.  Ask for the car to be put in the daylight and be dried off if it's wet so you can video it. The big companies will do this.

Dont know why these Car Companies try there best to Rattle their customers you would think they would be trying to hang onto customers.

The price of renting  cars is now ridiculous we are considering either purchasing our own or if all these uncertainties with travel restriction & testing continue might even try to sell up.
