I am having increasing problems getting around because of breathing difficulties, so on an upcoming trip to the UK have booked assistance. Ryanair says it will be "getting to the boarding gate" - has anyone used this, and how did it work please?

I have been using assistance from the UK to Spain and back again for a few years. Its not provided by the airlines but by the airports and I can say without exception its all ways good. When you arrive going out you present yourself to the assistance desk and they then take you through check in and security and down to your gate. They then come back to the gate when it boards to help you on if you need that level. I manage to get on and off myself using my sticks. The one time I couldn't they have a lift which takes you upto the door at the opposite side that the able body passengers get on. Its the same routine going out or coming in. Just make sure you have booked it via your airline so they expect you.

I've had similar positive experiences to this post when travelling with my late father. The assistance staff were generally very positive & helpful - apart from one guy at Palma who wouldn't either take my Dad or let me take my Dad in the airport wheelchair out to collect our hire car, so I had to collect the car and then come back to Arrivals to collect him.

One other point - if you book assistance then you won't be allowed to sit in an exit row seat.
