Hello! My first post on this forum. Hopefully the first of many!

We're at a very early stages of exploring the possibility of moving to Spain next year. Los Alcazares area, broadly, appears to be attractive. We've never been to Spain, in fact, my wife has never been to mainland Europe. We own property in the Dominican Republic and our plan was originally to retire and spend four months a year there. Unfortunately, five years ago, I became a disabled person, I now walk very short distances (mainly around the house) and use a wheelchair for longer distances. Dominican Republic is lovely but not exactly wheelchair accessible! Fine for a couple of weeks, but not longer periods. As a result, we're thinking Europe will be a better move.

Instead of a visit to Dom Rep in January, we are thinking of coming out to Spain, mainly to get a feel for the place.

I drive using hand controls. I'd like to rent a car but I'm struggling to find somewhere that has adapted vehicles. Anyone know of a car rental that has hand controls available? In the UK, most large companies will have 'some' available. I was trying to get in touch with Hertz as I thought they may, as a big company, have something? I think because the new airport is opening soon (now?) it isn't clear whether Hertz cover there yet?

If we can't rent a car (my wife won't drive there, she's not keen on driving in the UK) then any recommendations for taxi transfers from the new airport to the coastal areas? Rough cost? Alternative transfer options? We're apparently coming in to the new airport.

I'd prefer to rent a car so that we can explore a wider area, but if not, we're happy to just chill out.

Any recommendations for accessible apartment rentals for a couple of weeks, things to do (I know it's out of season) and estate agents who have a decent reputation?

Any help, advice or directions gratefully received!

Thanks, Keith

contact lucy at Flamenca Cars   www.flamencacars.org

not sure if they have adapted cars but they also do airport transfers 40-50€ each way.

Look at Murcia Holiday Rentals and Villa Solera for property rentals or post your requirements on Facebook pages for Los Alcazares..there are lots !!

We have a rental apartment but its not in Los Alcazares itself but a few minutes drive inland  I can pm you a link if youre interested

A flat taxi fare of €29 has been agreed.  Information to this effect is posted on the Murcia International web site.

This is from Murcia Today

After much debate in recent months the taxi drivers of Murcia voted on Wednesday in favour of a fixed fare of 29 euros between the regional capital and the new Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera, which is set to come into operation on 15th January.

Yes confirm this as re-read article.  So that’ll be about 50€ one way Corvera - San Pedro/Los Alcazares.

Re. transfers from Corvera airport to Los Alcazares/San Pedro etc. Will there not be 'Resort Hoppas' as at other airports during the Summer months? I flew into Alicante last year and booked a 'Return Hoppa' between the airport and Benidorm. Six stops, 25 euros.

The only thing I would say to you any other person hiring a car is avoid Rhodium/ Goldcar. I flew into Murcia last August and the scammed me

for about 180 euros by inventing damage to the car (which I did not). They took the money after I left Spain from my credit car. My bank

eventually compensated me in full for it.

Don’t even think about Jet2.com/Easyrent and another name I can’t remember. Booked car hire through Easy Jet to pick car up at Leeds Bradford got scammed out of 5000 euros still fighting the case.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the replies. Finding an adapted car to hire appears to be impossible, so we've shelved the idea of coming down in January and will head off to the Dominican Republic instead (flying via New York!) I'm considering driving down later in the year, as if we are going to seriously think about moving, we're going to want to explore wider than just one area.

Any recommendations for good value areas? Up & coming? Places to avoid? We're mid-fifties. I'm a wheelchair user but can walk short distances with two sticks. Not party animals although nice restaurants a bonus. Prefer to be close to the sea, but that isn't a deal breaker, so inland considered as obviously better value. We're a blank canvas! Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?
