We drove from Manchester to San Javier a few times....ferry from Plymouth orvPortsmouth to Santander then stopped overnight just south of Madrid in a cheap motorway hotel..it takes about 10 hrs if you stop a couple of times but depends on the ferry times if you want to domit in one go or if you only have one driver its too much....we always used the toll roads but all the roads are quiet once you're out of Santander....Murcia is a bit busy depending on time but for part of thevjourney there is hardly any traffic at all. Avoid Madrid at all costs!!

Hi Mcole,

We, on the other hand, never use the toll roads and it takes us 10 hours including stops to the Torrevieja area.

We always do the Portsmouth-Santander route for convenience. It's 541 miles to LA from Santander according to google maps and should take 8 hours 4 mins without a stop travelling at the speed limits on non-toll roads.

It is a long haul but I like driving and we make 1 stop just before Madrid.

It's basically the A67, N627, A73, E5/A1, M50, A3/E901, A31/E903, A30 around Murcia, RM19, right on the AP7 and LA North is junction 786.

Full instructions and map for non-toll roads here.

I've drove three times from Blackburn to Murcia and channel tunnel past Paris straight forward but hard work yes a lot of tolls in France but good roads me and my brother did it in 23 hours from apartment to home
