I'd advise visiting for a while, get to know both areas, then make a decision.

Think that depends on what you want from your move, what things do you like/don't like? Is sport important to you? Have you concerns about squatters/ crime in the area? What are the health benefits/downsides? That kind of thing. You need to provide more information in order to receive a considered reply. I'm sure people will respond if they have some information about your likes and dislikes. Good luck with your move.
We bought in San Pedro, not too far away & love it but we don't spend the whole year there. It's flat, great cycling opportunities, plenty of sport, low crime. It's very Spanish but does have a good few expats as well but still retains its Spanish feel. I'm not offering an opinion on either of the two places you refer to as other than dining out sometimes in LA I have no experience of it other than to say that for us it is too big and touristy to live in but that's just my impression. I'm sure you'll get many helpful suggestions and wish you well.

When we were in the area last May, we stayed in Los Narejos. LA is the more Spanish end but there is a good weekly market in both areas. We thought the LN end would be mkre likely to close down in the winter months as it appeared to be a more 'british/tourist' area and has the 525 strip of restaurants and bars if that us your thing. Depends what you are after.. it is all very flat. Beware...if you go too far towards the south end of LA, they had a serious flooding issue a few years back..we were told to look north if where the river gully meets the sea. We ended up buying in Santiago de la ribera/lo pagan area and we love it (not full time residents though). Good Luck

We bought a house in Los Alcázares this year. It's a Holiday Home at the moment but our plan is to retire permanently in a couple of years. It's a lovely place with beautiful beaches and restaurants. We love the Spanish feel and it doesn't seem touristy at all to us, unlike nearer the 525 strip. As I understand it a lot of work has been done around the flooding areas with improvements to the ramblas etc
