Looking to buy a holiday home in the Mar Menor area.  Spending time in/on the sea is very important to us but I have heard that the Mar Menor has no longer got any Blue Flag Beaches due to poor water quality?  Is water/beach pollution a problem in this area?  What are the best beaches in the area?

Hi

I live in Santiago La Ribera and can assure you the beaches are very clean and well kept, last weekend there were many people in the sea enjoying themselves.

I often walk to Lo Pagan early in the mornings and the street cleaners are out washing the pavements.

The quality of the sea is improving yearly there was a problem with the fertilizer running from the fields but that had been addressed by the regional government.

This year there were record catches of fish and a species of sea turtle that was thought to have been long gone has been found once again breeding in the Mar Menor.

I am looking forward to getting back into the water.

Hi Jackie,

I think this might back up the great response  from Eduardo. You will love the Mar Menor.

I endorse Eduardo’s comments, the water is so much clearer and to walk into the calm waters is incredible, enjoy coming to see it for yourselves.

You are correct they have lost their blue flag status, due to the fertiliser run off from the fields, after floods (not an isolated occurrence eithe)   I believe the government are working towards improvement. The water in Los Alcazares or Los Narejos always looks murky because of the algae. I prefer not to swim in it for these reasons and always head to the Mediterranean.  Shame because it is my nearest beach.

I was reading the other day, that there is an almost extinct breed of sea turtles breading there again and the sea horses are thriving.

We bought in the Lo Pagan/San Pedro area where you have the Mar Menor beaches, but also the Salinas nature reserve with its Med beaches as an option.

really? yes they have no blue flag beaches at the moment but the water clarity is superb. I suggest you just move 50 meteres down the beach if 1 patch is murky becasue the majority of the 5km is lovely and clear
