First timer to Costa Calida - Where to stay ?

Hoping to get a weeks family break early April. We are aiming to rent a villa. Will more than likely rent a car .
Really haven't a clue where would be a good resort to base our self's in. Ideally not looking for a mass built up resort ( We usually holiday in Nerja ) but would still like all the necessary amenities and nice beach.
I would greatly appreciate any first hand experiences of the area to help guide me a little more...
