Hi. My name is Jo and this is my first post! My family are considering moving to Spain, hopefully Murcia, next year. I have a child who will be 11 by then. I'm after some advice regarding the cost of schools please! And also the cost of health insurance. In fact, any advice would be welcome! We would probably rent initially before buying. Best wishes, Jo. X

Hi Eraser,

Great article. I remember reading a summery of it a few years back, but still holds true. Though I think given the current situation it will only get more difficult and employed work will be more or less non existent.

I used to meet many of the types of people in the article (Losers/dreamers) in the bars up at Cabo Roig, who couldn’t make a go of it in the UK and somehow thought that coming to Spain, where they didn’t speak a word of Spanish, it was going to workout different.

As was mentioned in the article I do think for people with the right attitude (hard graft) and and an entrepreneurial flair (if you’ve only ever worked for someone else all your life that probably isn’t you) there is a good living to be made.

But good luck to anyone who does takes the plunge.

How much Spanish does your 11 year old have?

If none, then they will have to be British schooled.  You can find private schools online and see the rates.

Health insurance, depends, will you be running your own business?

Hi

The rough cost of private school fees is around €500pcm, it increases with year group. Plus lunch, bus, uniform etc. A lot cheaper than the UK, but expensive on Spanish salaries.

They do not have to go to a british school if they have no Spanish, but they may struggle in a spanish public school. Some children pick up Spanish very quickly and others really struggle. You know your child. There are quite a few international schools in Murcia to choose from but it depends where you are going to live as to which will be the most accessible.

If you're going to move next year then get them a spanish teacher now and give them a head start.

Good luck.

11 is late for a child to integrate into the Spanish school system. Very few kids who transfer at that age from England thrive and most of them end up back in the UK with half an education.

But Dax is right, if you are going to give it a go, intensive Spanish lessons need to start now..
