Squatters can be a problem in area you live in throughout the world, Los Alcazares is no different to any other Murcia area.
Unfortunately over the years they have got more professional, there are some people that are bogus estate agents breaking into empty properties changing the locks then renting them again with a bogus contract.
In some circumstances the squatters make a business by moving in for a short time and then asking a fee to move out.
If you are leaving the property empty for a period of time, ensure you have someone to check on it at regular intervals, maybe if you cannot afford a security system install some cameras even if dummy, but beware the laws in Spain say you donot have the right to photo or film anyone without there permission, so if you do have cameras make sure they are not imposing on neighbours or the street.

I would recommend that you install a monitored alarm system such as Securitas Verisure. Costs about 250€ to install in a 3-bed, two-storey house and 40€ a month for the monitoring system. If someone breaks in, after checking that the people in the property don't have the secret passwords, the company would immediately call the police. If you don't want to have a monthly payment, sometimes just having the alarm installed and the alarm notices on the outside of the house, are enough to deter anyone from trying to break in.

Yes my brother in Santiago De La Ribera has his apartment broken into, he had brand new front door, they changed the locks.
I've gotten Internet and a cheap ezviz camera (35€) to keep tabs now. Unless u contact police within 48hrs they can stay forever
It's a nightmare .. they did leave but had ransacked the place n left very little.. taken wardrobes , mattresses , sofas, and everything in the cupboards.. the stopped short of ripping out the plumbing.. but it has been known they do that too.. A complete nightmare .. get ur internet n cameras and be extremely friendly with your neighbours and get their mobile numbers in case of emergency
Otherwise you will be fine and have a great time :) Mar Menor is a great place to live

Eduardo is correct but he left out the bit about how squatters in Spain are effectively protected by theGovernment who provide squatters with more rights than homeowners.
If you don't get them out of your property within the first 48 hours you have a major & potentially hugely expensive problem on your hands. You can Google this for more information & advice on the best steps to take to protect your property & what to do if you have the misfortune to become a victim.
The problem is worse in some parts of the country, notably Barcelona, but it can happen anywhere as Eduardo said.
