Has anyone been questioned about exceeding the permitted 90/180 day ruling? How do they monitor your stay? I just can’t see the Spanish giving two hoots about visitors overstaying their welcome. They need all the income they can get off us brits.

You must remember everting is now computerised and checks will be made on passports, consequences can be very strict.
Deportation with a ban from entering the Schengen Area, And heavy fines being imposed.
Remember people have been turned back from Airports just because there passport did not have the required length of time left.
The British Government is expelling people from the uk for overstaying and now Britain is a third country the same will apply/
Spain will still have the tourists from other countries and I would not believe that there will not be to many people that wish to break the law risking fines and other cosiquenses

Really? You forget that other nationalities have been moving in and taking over any previous Brit occupation of the area. All my neighbours are now Scandinavian. The reason the the Schengen area has set up the ETIAS system is to control who comes and goes and how long they stay. How do they monitor your stay? Well, passports are now biometric and every time you book a flight or pass through a border control, your movements are registered and followed. Spain is part of Schengen group and as such, follows the agreed rules. Overstaying could involve a fine and ban for entering the entire Schengen area for a period of time.

Your permitted visits can be worked out using one of the many Schengen calculators.

Think you may be over estimating the value of "long term" brits. Think it is the 2 week tourist to Benidorm etc that contribute more. Over the past year, here in Camposol, we have noticed an increase in the number of mainland European owners, especially Dutch and Belgian, compensating for losing the brits.....

I couldn't agree more than what philtox wrote.
However, unfortunately rules are rules, we all know if your coming here as an owner your limited to your 90 day rule, Scandinavians aren't, we have many GB friends that come and go periodically and it's always sad to see them go back, and I seriously feel for them.
We moved permanently 1 and a half years ago and feel so guilty when our friends say we've got to go back, because they used to come out Willy nilly.
But that is thier choice, we've made ours, and I have to say to people out there, if you like it here, MOVE HERE, but be prepared to do lots of running around for the first year or more before settling down.
Oh and mags, Scandinavians are lovely we know so many, plus Dutch Belgian French, thier all contributing to the Spanish economy, I only wish that Brits could too, but they are not allowed to.
Hey ho that's what coming out of the EU means.

"Absolutely. Never was a Brexit fan." Nor me.
I have yet to see any statement that identifies one single benefit to the UK from Brexit - not one!

Just posted on the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain's Facebook group and on their website regarding the forthcoming EES/Entry-Exit System for border control within the EU:

Thanks Mags this will certainly speed things up at the border.
Maybe people that think they are special and above the law will now realize they wil be caught and face the consequences.
