Hi,

A few years ago I visited  Mar Menor and I am now thinking of buying a property around San Pedro to sanitago de la ribera. I did some research and found that the water in Mar menor is not so clean. Since I am a keen swimmer this could be a dealbreaker.. Can anyone living around there give me some unbias info? Has things improved and is the local council actually doing anything about it as I read the pollution is due to agricultural changes and sewage pipes from the surrounding towns. Many thanks in advance.

The gota fria in September gave us the worst floods for 100 years. Everything ended up in the Mar Menor - agricultural fertiliser, sewage, furniture, household rubbish ... you name it.

The water is now clearer, but not like it was (say) 2 years ago.

I have a share in a boat at Los Urrutias, so I go there fairly often. I can see fish again, so things are improving.

Hi Tines, I'm a regular open water swimmer at home (Dorset) and Mar Menor area. I swam in the Mar Menor this Month, perfect, no issues for me. I also swam further up at El Mojon, wonderful, great temperatures. Don't let all the bad news sway you, get out and try it yourself you won't be disappointed

For the past few years any family that visit have only sat on the Mar Menor beach, and swum in the Med.

I’d avoid it’s not very appealing loads of green algae. It lost its blue flag status a few years ago. I always swim in the med

Hi we have a house in San Pedro along avenida del Puerto we spent 3 great weeks there in September to October, swam several times in mar Menor at SP and Santiago end, it was absolutely fine, no algae, clear water, loads of fish, fun watching them snorkeling. The mar Menor is in good shape, amazing after the devastation a year a go. It’s also great to have the Med option 5 minutes away!
