Hello everyone,

My wife and I have decided that now is the time to try and find a holiday home in Spain for us in the winter months as well as family for summer visits and Mar Menor would seem to be an excellent area based on weather, transport links, beaches etc. to look for a property.  I am making an initial visit to the south of Mar Menor over the period 28 - 31 Jan 22 based in Mar De Cristal and would appreciate any advice on where/areas to visit, estate agents and if anyone is willing to share their experiences over property buying in the area then that would be much appreciated.

Best wishes from a cold and dreary UK

Chris and Linda

Mar de Cristal is very quiet during the winter season must places are closed but the local town of Los Belones has all your amenities and open all year . Checking the area out during the off season is very wise during the high season there is a completely different vibe good luck with your search

Thanks for your comment.  I will have a hire car when I visit so will be able to get around most of the south area of Mar Menor and if time allows up as far as San Pedro del Pinatar.

As per the previous reply ... the southern end of the Mar Menor is very quiet at this time of year.

It gets busier from Los Alcazares up.

San Javier/San Pedro/Santiago are viable right through the year.

Check out Santiago De La Ribera    busy all year round. I can recommend

Paradise Properties, Calle Conde Lisea, 30720 Santiago de la Ribera, Murcia, Spain

who helped me purchase and were not very pushy. Also could advise on NIE and other aspects

Thanks for all your comments.  Much appreciated.    We have looked at Santiago De La Ribera (which looks good) and also have been looking at Lo Pagan and the San Pedro area.  Prices in Lo Pagan are lower than San Pedro and I imagine it is a lot quieter in summer than San Pedro but still within walking distance and with lots of amenities around and places of interest to visit ?  Am I right in thinking that these areas would be good ones to investigate further for us (who love fish restaurants, nature (husband a keen photographer) somewhere to learn more Spanish (have done 18 months so far) but also somewhere that our children and grandchildren would find interesting as well?  Am in the process of making a tick list for Chris when he visits at the end of the month. Linda

Hi, we have lived in Spain for 5 years slightly inland, about 20 minutes. However we have continually searched along the coast for a second home. We love Santiago and Lo Pagan. Finally we purchased 6 months ago in Lo Pagan. One of the reasons for choosing there was due to it being a very Spanish area, we enjoy being with local people. It does get very busy (normally, excluding Covid) in the summer with tourists, but much quieter outside these times. Plenty of bars, eateries, cycle rides, walks, the salt lakes are a photographer's dream as are the sunsets. I would thoroughly recommend you do lots of homework prior to purchase, there are some real gems to find, again it's what you personally want. Good luck with the search!!

Thanks for all your info - it was very helpful and has narrowed our search down quite a lot.  We have done quite a lot of research already and having lived in Europe on and off for 40 odd years (my husband was in the Army) we like the idea of more 'Spanish' than 'Touristic' and think that Lo Pagan and nearby areas would suit us well.

I think that you would definitely be right in thinking that San Pedro del Pinatar, Lo Pagán and Santiago de la Ribera would be really good places to investigate further. We're in the middle of winter and yet all these areas are relatively buzzing with local people and some tourists too. We have a wonderful selection of supermarkets and the sort of shops that you need on a regular basis. There is definitely no feeling of those towns being empty or closed.
