Hello,

This is a really vague question, but being a novice to this part of Spain, I would appreciate any kind of help and tips. Myself and partner, me 49, him 52 would like a holiday home but maybe move over in a few years. I understand jobs are hard to find, but if we still have a few years of work in us, which region would be good? I’ve seen lovely villas in Almeria, Albox, Huercal Overa etc but also some nice ones in Mazzaron Country club Camposol and Calasparra. Would appreciate any information at all as I am clueless at this point, I wouldn’t like to end up somewhere too quiet and remote.  I have worked in tourism and estate agency and my partner is a commercial painter & decorator. Thanks in advance, Antonia.

If you can afford to move to Spain without needing employment then go for it ...if you need a job to help you pay the bills to get by then don't move to Spain .... unemployment in Spain is almost 40% so think again.

Hi, Antonia.

We have just completed on our property purchase after 8 visits to the Almeria/ Murcia regions, 12 house viewings and exploring 1000's of kilometres!! The reason I'm saying this is because (although this forum is full of very, very helpful people), it's very much a personal choice and decision. We ended up using checklists with about 20 items on them and chose by doing this! I know it sounds crazy, but we feel we had to do this to get the right location for us and the second we walked into the property we eventually purchased, we knew.

You have time to come and explore and only you know what's important to you so take your time and it'll pay off.

Good luck 🤞

There is lots of choice, with key dependencies being your budget and what sort of lifestyle you want. Also consider that what you may want from a holiday home may be different from a permanent home in the future.

The areas you mention inland in western Murcia and Almeria will generally offer nice villas, often with plenty of land around you, but may be further from amenities, shops, bars, restaurants. Calasparra is quite a way inland and a historic Spanish town, albeit with some newish urbanisations.Whereas Camposol is a fairly large urbanisation of 4,000+ properties, a lot of British ex-pats; and it's not far from the coast and the beaches of Aguilas & Puerto Mazarron.

I would certainly suggest coming over and spending a few days staying in and driving around each area to get a feel for them.

As per other comments, getting a job will probably be difficult. The Spanish economy was struggling before Covid and everywhere will be hit afterwards - you can see what is happening in the UK and the Spanish economy in these areas is even more reliant on tourism & hospitality. If you don't need a job to support yourself - more for something to do and top up your income - and you have a trade that you can offer as self-employed, then there are a large number of British ex-pats who often prefer employing reliable Brits for plumbing, builiding, maintenance, decorating, handyman type work.

Hope this helps!
