Hi.

We have a second home in Spain which needs work done and this is planned for September.  Would anyone know if this is classed as Essential Travel for insurance policy cover?

I know the insurance company will have the final say, but it is impossible to get through them and wondered if anyone has experienced this situation during covid.

Thank you.

I am in a similar situation and I checked with my Annual Travel Insurance provider (All Clear) and they said it wasn't classed as Essential Travel - and they confirmed this by email.

I think we just need to hope that the government changes their decision on this...

Thank you.  That's so disappointing.  Its crazy how the whole policy is revoked -  I would understand it if any covid related claims were declined. As you say fingers crossed 🤞

I am considering whether to travel anyway.

I'm normally quite risk-averse, however, if I think about what travel insurance covers:

Cancellation - if my flight is cancelled, the airline will refund me (eventually).

Lost baggage - I don't carry much of value.

Medical - this to me has always been the chief reason for travel insurance. The EHIC card is still valid until 31st December 2020, which provides cover for any urgent treatment in Spain. However, if (God forbid) anything really serious happened, it doesn't cover repatriation; and I have also heard of examples where people have used a private doctor or anbulance by mistake, which isn't covered.

I think the governement will change their advice, just not sure how soon...

We are thinking the same. What a fiasco!

Nothing been decided as yet, as down to each Regional Government whether they allow travel in/out of their region.

A National curfew between 11pm to 6am is effective this evening, although each Regional Government can change this by one hour either way.

We are with staysure health insurance. We rang and had the FCO cover added. It cost £25, but half of that was admin. We know have full cover excluding COVID.

We renew our annual insurance in January, to add it then it will be about £5!!!

We phoned our insurance company, Nationwide Building Society - (the UK Insurance) last week and they said we could still travel to Spain based on the UK govt guidelines on the website. We would still be covered for the Covid virus as well as our usual medical cover. However, they will not cover cancellation of flights , hotels booking and car hire etc., Luckily, Ryanair offers free cancellation on fligths and I believe car hire also. If you book hotels now, you can get also free  cancellation. It is best for each individual to phone up their own insurance company to clarify before booking anything as the situation is very fluid. We are now booking our flights to leave for Spain. Hope that helps......

as far as we know, it is not a local lockdown, only curfew and people cannot go out after 11pm, the situation is changing and local govt has been given more power to impose more restrictions if necessary to control the spread of the virus ........
