Hi. I am not resident in Spain but will spend more than 90 days a year here.  On looking at my UK car insurance documents, they indicate that my insurance for my car left in the UK will only be valid if I am out of the UK for no more than 90 days in a policy year.  Any advice as to how to handle this situation e.g. is there a UK insurer who will cover more than 90 days? Thank you.

Surely that’s if you take the car out of the UK for more than 90 days not if  you are out of the UK.

It’s the car not yourself !  You can only stay for a maximum of 90 days unless you are from a European country anyway.

That is 90 in 180 days, so theoretically 180 in 360 - but you are correct, it does relate to the car.

Obviously if the O.P. takes his car out of the UK it will be covered for a maximum of 90 days according to the policy.

It would be interesting if UK car insurers started monitoring how much time the policy holders spend outside the UK!

Hi, thanks for all your comments.  Just to clarify,  I own a car in the UK and own a  car in Spain. If I myself are out of the UK for more than 90 days in a year, my car insurance policy for my car in the UK is not valid, because the policy stipulates I cannot be out of the UK for more than 90 days in the policy year.  I'm with Direct Line so surely this must happen to others??

Thanks, Valerie. I've questioned them and it's definitely the case.  It's similar to you not being able to leave your UK property empty for more than 60 days at a time

You can pay an extra premium to extend for a further 90 days

There are other insurers who offer better conditions. My house ins allows me to be away 180 days per yr but no more than 90 continuous(that covers our 2x 90 day visits) and our car ins is with Saga, cos we take our car over by ferry and that covers full 365 days wherever the car is. However with Brittany's ever rising charges we may look to fly next year as we do have a spanish car over there. Its just we like to take a car full of belongings each time. LV also do extra time on their insurance, just have to shop around.

Thanks Pauline.  It's like shopping around for the right travel insurance,  I suppose (we are now with LV for thar).  I just think its crazy because what difference does it make how long you've been away for if   you're driving and have a bump?!. I get it for, say, being stolen off your drive but not foe everything else.  The mad world of insurance 😆 x
