Hi everyone,

I have just joined the forum and I thought I would introduce myself.

I am currently based in Manchester UK and work as an IT contractor/freelancer.

Looking to buy a flat in the Murcia, Alicante or maybe Malaga areas. Not sure yet, hence this message. I don't intend to move permanently yet, so will be a holiday home or bolt hole as I can work remotely depending on my client.

Can you recommend ay particular areas? My main requirements are that there is some outside space, either a smallish garden or terrace/balcony. Also not too far from an airport, max 45 mins in a car.

I am learning Spanish as well, so would like an area that is mixed with Spanish locals. Also I am not a golf fan (sorry) so not next to a golf course!

I have just started my journey of looking for a place so will probably ask more specific questions in the future.

¡Un saludo!

Ayub M.

Hi Ayub, welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you will be spoiled for choice.

I would suggest Málaga as there is a lot of hi tech activity there, it's an excellent all year round city, has a great airport and has a good mix of Spanish/ex pats community. Historic city and on the sea. Great climate but hot ,very, in summer. Mild winters.

Alicante is a wonderful city too and a great airport with plenty of flights throughout the year. Good mix of Spanish & ex pats as well and again it's on the sea.  And is year round.

Murcia similar to the above and while it has an airport it is fairly new and not as many flight options yet.

Cartagena is another option, smaller. Your closest airport would be Murcia I ternational but, as mentioned, not many flights year round. After that it's Alicante airport

Have you considered Valencia? Thriving modern city, great airport , I don't know it intimately but loved my visits and great road network, great food options & Spain is well connected all over with excellent road systems. .

Sport is well catered for in most places.

You sound young so I'm not going to suggest any of the smaller towns in the Mar Menor in Murcia which are great, wonderful in fact,  but a little dominated by lovely  retirees like myself🙂 & many places closed in winter.

Seville is another one to consider. Haven't mentioned Madrid as it's inland, very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

Barcelona, expensive for property, very congested but very lovely too. Also, it's Catalan and while Spanish is spoken and understood everywhere there is an emphasis on Catalan and some frown on anyone not speaking it

I haven't mentioned any of the inland cities apart from Murcia but if you have any questions give me a shout and I'll try to help.

Best of luck with your new project.

.

Hi Anne75,

Thanks for the reply.

I really like Malaga as well but my wife prefers Alicante, probably as we stayed there before.

I was in Valencia last November and it was great. So another contender. We stayed in an apartment but there was not much outside space.

Would probably need to look outside the city.

So many options, I just need to get the ball rolling. Looking to rent somewhere at the end of October or early November to start looking at locales.

If you think you will be flying regularly (or have visitors coming over to see you frequently), then Alicante airport has much more flight options than Murcia Airport. 45 mins driving time would get you to (or from) most of northern & central Murcia.

Murcia City itself is lovely and I would imagine there will be a wide range of apartments available. Most people would advise to rent first to get to know any area, before jumping in and buying.

You don't mention your budget for either renting or buying; or number of bedrooms, etc. Rightmove Spain is a good place to start to see what you can get where for your money, but you can't beat visiting an area in person - have a holiday here, hire a car and drive round the areas you are considering.

Don't automatically discount properties on golf resorts - although they can be more expensive and have higher maintenance fees, you generally get good security, good amenities and they can be busy-ish all year round, whereas some coastal areas an be very quiet out of the peak holiday seasons. Also, they generally look attractive, especially if they are popular and well-maintained.

Finally - remember the rules! Assuming your are a UK citizen, then you can only spend 90 in any 180 days here unless you become a resident, when you will need a visa, pay taxes in Spain, etc.

Hope this helps!

Hi RichT,

Thanks for the response. I've not been to Murcia yet but am considering staying there later this year.

I take on board your advice about golf resorts. I think initially I was adamant I don't like golf resort type locations!

I think ideally we are looking for a minimum 2 bedroom place. It's just me and my wife who would use it mostly and maybe our adult kids.

Also we have become very popular since we mentioned buying abroad!

Yes, I am a UK citizen. I am aware of the 90 day rule which is probably sufficient time as I am not planning to move permanently. I am alsoconsidering a digital nomad visa so I can spend longer in Spain. Depends on work though.

Hello Ayub

I believe  Malaga area will offer all of what you are looking for.
Just be aware on the renting as Spanish landlords will raise the summer months rental to around 2.5k euros a month and from October to around March will be 900 euros. Good luck.

Great thanks for the info. I won't be able to go before mid October anyway so hopefully should see a price drop.
