Sadly it looks like the days of totally free banking in Spain are over. We have always been with Cajamar - barring a disastrous few months with BBVA before we learnt better! - and it was free with no commitment. Over the years they have added conditions like regular payments in, using their house...

Hi Peter, we too are non residents with Cajamar since April and havent been charged any fees or had any conditions applied, so was disturbed by your post. Having left Sabadell with huge non res fees, we are very happy and as we only visit twice x90day stays per year, we dont use atm much(tend to draw large amounts to last a month, so maybe 3/4 times twice a year, we havent had any fees(yet!). I have recommended them to everyone so do hope things dont change.

Pauline.

I too am getting tired of the high fees Sabadell charge for non residents. Does anyone know if any staff speak English at the Cajamar branch in the Port?
How easy is it to change banks - including direct debits.
I am interested in this, how long does it take to get debit cards as well - as we will need to collect from branch
Easy and Banks in Spain are not words that go together I am afraid.
I can only speak for my branch and as Cajamar is prevalent in rural areas I dont think there will be many branches that have english speakers. However our house is not on the coast and very few english speakers around, but if you put into google translate questions you want to ask first, then translate and have them all ready before you go, it makes it easier. Take all direct debit info(statements or receipts from present bank). We have very limited spanish but we managed with google translate. Cajamar dont automatically give you a transfer service, you need to ask for it to be added(no fee and only if you need to use it for sending money to other persons accounts ie tradesmen, builders etc.) It took 2wks to return and collect debit cards and at least a month for debits to transfer before we closed old account. Must admit I telephoned or emailed all our debit companies to advise of changeover as well to be sure. Some accepted by phone ,others by email confirmation. If possible do you have a spanish speaking friend to go with you? We didnt, but managed. All our paperwork was done in english as well as spanish. The account is called "weferrent". I wish I,d done it years ago. Sabadell has had over 2000€ in fees from us over the years.

Pauline.
