Hello,
Further to the previous, a bit more info on trains.
Obviously there are no trains in Mazarron or El Puerto. But when I have been in the port I use the bus to connect to the railways quite easily. There is a railway station in Cartagena and it is conveniently located just next to the bus station but the services are somewhat limited and it's a slow line.
Murcia is also on the railway and offers useful services to Madrid, Albacete, Alicante and Barcelona (it takes 7 hours!). But it's a bit of a walk or taxi drive between the bus terminal and Murcia el Carmen railway station over the river.
Bear in mind that owing to a rail upgrade the stations at Lorca and Totana will be shut for 3 years.
On buses, I have found them to be both cheap and reliable (if not always punctual). I don't have a car when I stay in the Port and have successfully used them for many trips and outings. The local services between Mazarron Pueblo, Bolnuevo, Isla Plana etc are very handy.

On the bus to Murcia. Can you pay the driver or must tickets be purchased online or even is there a ticket office at Mazzaron

Hi badger,
El Puerto de Mazarron bus station is unstaffed and has no ticket machines. The easiest thing is just to pay the driver in cash when you board. I've never known the service to be full.

Hi Badger - you may like to know it's easier to ask the driver at Puerto Mazarron for a return ticket (ida y veulta) because it will save you a big queue at Murcia bus station coming home. Always go to the stand early if travelling on Fri/Sat the bus will be full to the gunnells with homegoing uni students, and all their washing! Won't take you long to do your research on public transport round here - it's virtually non-existent, On Saturday I wanted to go to the market in Mazarron Pueblo, went for the Martinez bus and after a halfhour wait in boiling sun and irritating flies I walked away, Only to see the bus dawdling down the street like he was on a Sunday jaunt, as I was going across the footbridge to the local shops. (Ye of little faith) lol.
