Forum regulars will know of my opinion on car rental companies in Spain, and Goldcar is on my black list. I returned back to the UK last week and I'm posting my latest experience of car hire. Hopefully someone might find it useful.

My preferred company had no cars available so I did my usual search on DoYouSpain and booked a medium size car with Rentacar on a full/full basis. When the receipt was emailed it was actually a contract with InteRent. I hadn't booked with either of these companies before, so I didn't know what to expect. Interent are 'on airport' at Alicante so I went to their office in arrivals only to find it closed with a note on the shutter to go to Goldcar at the other end of the hall. Shock horror....Goldcar again!

The office had the InteRent stickers and when I asked I was told they had bought out both companies, so I feared the worse. However, the assistant was extremely helpful as was the chap I got to check over the car with me. I allowed them to block my card as is usual, photographed the car and drove off. I always allow plenty of time when returning so I parked up, photographed the car once more and headed to the office and asked for someone to check the car with me. I was told I would have to wait for that or hand the keys over and sign the car off, I said I would wait. Ten minutes later a girl came over, checked the car with me and signed it off electronically. I asked her to sign my check in paper which she did, and stamped it as no damage, tank full, job done!

OK the car wasn't new, but it was very good and I'm fussy. So I speak as I find and would book with them again. That car cost me a grand total of 14.07€ for 10 days hire!

Presumably there is a petrol station very close to the airport?

Thank you

At Alicante, of course. There's one on the A7 if you're coming up from the south like me, and there's one almost opposite the airport if you are coming from Alicante, Santa Pola etc. I can't speak for Corvera as I haven't used that route yet, but just google it, you'll soon find them.

Ive just come back from Alicante, having used Goldcar booked thru Holiday Autos. Checked the car, took photos, showed receipt for petrol, took photo of fuel guage showing full etc etc etc. Subsequently got Goldcars ‘final statement of account showing zero balance. All good...... UNTIL i checked with my Credit card company to find that they’ve taken random amounts of €82, €94 and then equally randomly refunded €63!!!??? All totally random, unexplained, and irreconcilable with their final account statement. In fact worse still , the €94 was taken off the CC AFTER theyd sent me the account saying i owed nothing!!! Its currently being investigated by Holiday Autos as I write this. GC are seemingly a law unto themselves, who seem to feel that its ‘open season’ in your credit card redardless of how many precautions you take. CROOKS!!!!

That's interesting, was your car on a full/full contract or full/empty? It looks as though they charged you for fuel and then refunded the tank full minus their refueling charge, which is what all companies do. My contract was full/full, so no additional charges are made. My card was blocked for 1046€ as I have an annual insurance policy, and I had a text from my bank saying that had happened although it never actually shows on your statement. When I returned my car last week, I got the girl to write on the CHECK IN paper that there was no damage and the tank was full. She signed it and then put a company stamp on it.

Always cautious of these companies I waited a few days and phoned my bank to see if the block had been lifted, and apparently it had. I then asked if they could debit my card should they feel fit and she told me they could at any time, and that applies to any company you give your card details to.

If you do what I did complete with dated photos you have the evidence to challenge the hire company and your credit card company. Unfortunately you can't escape the hassle should this happen, but it's a good idea to publish your experience in any way you can.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yes i too had the ‘full to full’ option and i have my own (AA) annual insurance so i dont have theirs. I always take photos of everything; incl glove compt, high niz vests, warning triangle, spare tyre.... the lot. But as you say, amounts can still be randomly deducted even if they arent warranted; especially if the company are dodgy!!!

Did you actually book with Goldcar? I didn't, but I posted this warning that Goldcar have taken over RentaCar and InteRent which was a surprise to me. I've just checked my paperwork and it is definitely Goldcar. However, all the internet forms sent to me including a 'how did we do' feedback form are from Interent.es. So is Goldcar up to something?

I booked thru Holiday Autos but the pick up/hire was from Goldcar and at their desk at Alicante Airport.
