Hi all, Just wondering if P de M is a good place to buy a property in? Is it open all year round? And what  is the area like in terms of  living there for 2 to 3 months initially? Any spanish  classes available? Thanks, Joan

Without knowing your personal preferences its very difficult to answer this question. You need to live there for a while, just rent for a week or two and explore the area. It has alot of positives and we enjoy it. Buying blind anywhere, even with other people's recommendations is not a good idea and many have lived to regret it. Best of luck!

Hi Joan,

P.de Maz is open all the year round. Although obviously a lot quieter in the Winter quite a few restaurants and bars stay open. I really only use it in Winter/Spring/Autumn as it is too hot (and busy, busy) for me in Summer. It can be a bit scruffy in places but there are some long promenade walks out to Bolnuevo West and Isla Plana East. There are plenty of large supermarkets (bizarrely all located within 5-600 meters of each other). You can grab a bus to Cartagena for a few euros for a nice day out (or to Murcia) and that is a lovely drive over the hills. It suits me and probably best of all (from your point of view) is property is cheap compared to, say, around Malaga/Javea etc. Good luck.

I agree with the previous reply, we bought our first apartment in 2002 so know the area well. As the previous person has said holiday season is chaotic, the Spanish love the coast on a hot day and arrive en masse. The main holiday season is July and August, Spaniards come for at least 2 weeks then often 4. Impossible to park anywhere, supermarkets, restaurants are heaving. The beaches are full of parasols and the sea full of little bobbing heads, like hundreds of seals. Temperatures are hot, high 30s low 40s.

Away from the holiday months things quieten down. Bars and restaurants tend to close earlier in the evening but the food and service improves. During summer months service is usually done by n summer holiday season they are rubbish mid autumn to mid spring they can be delicious. I live in a small Spanish village, my Spanish neighbour is noted for he paellas so I have a yardstick to go on.

Property wise what do you want? A small villa near the coast? An apartment? A townhouse? We sold the apartment and bought a modern villa in a small community, 5 minutes drive into Fuente Alamo, a small market town. All the normal facilities like health centre, bank, supermarkets, clothes, shoes and the ubiquitous  Chinese bazaars/supermarkets. 25 minutes to the PdeM, and Cartagena, 45 minutes to tge Sierra Espuna.

hope I have given you a flavour of the local region. If you visit before buying try and make it a few months so you can see for yourself the different seasons.

Hi. We live in El Alamillo just outside the port. We have now lived here permanently for 3 years and love it. Yes July and Aug are heaving and crazy hot and we have learnt from experience to avoid the port etc in those months. Very quiet in the winter but lovely. I would suggest renting over the winter months to get a feel for the area. There's a local computer shop called Beep and his wife gives spanish lessons in a group or one to one .good luck. Any questions feel free to message me

From my experience avoid PALS and don't go to one recommended by an agent! I recently used BORNEO SUR, S.L. located in the port and can recommend.

As others have said, the Port is seasonal but it is a working town so things still happen in the winter. Some beaches can get crowded but there are over 30 in the bay if you want to venture from the bars etc.

A car is essential here as with a lot of places in Murcia, but there seem to be several buses serving most areas, although I've never had cause to use them. Shopping is good for everyday things and the Sunday market is excellent. Cartagena and Murcia have the larger multiples and up market fashion places, if that's your thing.

Best to rent a couple of times (low and high season) to get a feel for the place. Good luck
