My regular cycling trips include the blockbuster (well it is for me!) ride to Cartegena and back, some 32 miles.

In November it was an absolutely gorgeous day and so I spent a little more time exploring the city than usual. I came across the Military Museum and had a very interesting hour or so wandering around. What I couldn't believe was the amount of fighting that had gone on in the last 200 years within Spain itself. So I picked up a book in our local library yesterday on thus very subject. It's not an easy read being full of names, places and dates, but it confirms what has gone on.

Quite remarkable really and flies in the face of the experiences we have had since we bought our place in May. Such a welcoming country, full of fiestas and people seem to like a bloody good laugh.

Anyway, I'll try and plough through the book and I look forward to gaining more insight into Spain. What a fascinating place!

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. However, I see parts of it are on YouTube and I will be able to watch them.

Thank you for posting.

Cartagena is a fascinating place and so full of history. We've just returned after spending a few days there and visited as many of the ancient sites as we could. From 227 BC when it was taken over by the Carthaginians and then moving onto the Roman occupation, the history of the city has been continuous throughout the past 2,000+ years. Did you visit the Teatro Romano (the old Roman Amphitheatre) and the adjoining open-air museums that are stacked full of the remnants of the Roman occupation of the city? There have also been discoveries of Neanderthal remains in the area. For me, ancient history is more interesting than modern history but that the area is full of historic importance and interest, is of no doubt. Enjoy your reading.

After the Spanish civil war ended, the Spanish 1977 Amnesty Law, came into being through the Spanish Parliament in 1977, two years after Franco's death. The law freed political prisoners and permitted those exiled to return to Spain but also guaranteed impunity for those who participated in crimes during the Civil War and Francoist Spain. The law is still in force and has been used as a reason for not investigating and prosecuting Francoist human rights violations. Many families are now demanding that this Amnesty is revoked in order to discover the whereabouts of thousands of bodies, brutally murdered individually or in large groups and thrown into mass unmarked graves. A film made by Pedro Almodóvar and starring Penelope Cruz, called "Madres Paralelas" (Parallel Mothers) is the really moving story of such a family, whose search to find the body of a grandfather shot and buried somewhere near the village where he lived. It's available on Netflix in Spanish with English subtitles. A really moving film that shows some of the brutality that occured during the Franco dictatorship.

Indeed...if you want to know about Spain in any way you have to understand the Spanish Civil War ..its origins ...its world importance...the poets ...guernica ..Hitler..Europe's last stand v fascism..Communist Party Stalin..Churchill..

It's all there

We visited some of the Roman ruins but I am sure there are lots we haven't yet seen from that period and more besides that.

Having stumbled over the Military Museum I was shocked to discover Spain has been at war with itself long before the well known Civil War in the 1930s. Seems at odds with the evident friendly society we see today and something I am looking forward to learning more about.

Thanks Jorge1306. I have dabbled a bit into the history but there's so much to learn - and that of course depends on where you get your information from and which side you would have supported.
