Hi, I'm looking at relocating to roldan or surrounding areas from the UK. I am currently self employed and have been for the past 10 years. I work as a joiner and undertake all aspects of joinery work aswell as kitchen & bathrooms, building maintenance and full property renovations. I was wondering if anyone could help Guid me in the right direction with regards to finding work or whether or not there is work in this sector that is likely to be obtainable. Or is setting up as self employed there likely to be an option. Any help or information would be much appreciated, thanks

If you are from the UK and have a UK passport then you need either:

  • a working visa, which will need to be completed with your employer and confirm that you have a job in Spain - and in some circumstances the employer will have to state (and have it agreed) why they couldn't employ an existing Spaniard instead.
  • An 'autonomo' visa, to be self-employed. For this, you will need a full business plan, evidence of contracts already in place, or pending; proof that you are qualified to do the work; proof of no criminal record; and also proof that you have enough money for you and your family to live on for a year, in  case your business isn't successful. This link should help:  https://myspainvisa.com/self-employed-visa-spain/
Each visa has to be renewed annually.

Unemployment in Spain is high, so there is a lot of competition for jobs; and wages / salaries in Spain are around 2/3rds of those in the UK. Being able to speak Spanish would also be necessary - even if you only do work for ex-pats, you need to be able to deal with permits, suppliers, tax, etc. in Spanish.

That said, there are lots of people who have done this and perhaps accept lower pay for the lifestyle benefits of living in Spain. If you look through several pages of this forum, you will see there are always requests for recommendations for tradesmen of all types.

Hope this helps!

Hi Alan, unfortunately I am not there at the moment, sorry. I would have been interested in the work though. Are you wanting the work undertaken relatively soon? My email is ([email protected]). I wouldn't mind if you wanted to send me a message and discuss things further. Cheers

Kind regards

Steven
