If you are from the UK and have a UK passport then you need either:
- a working visa, which will need to be completed with your employer and confirm that you have a job in Spain - and in some circumstances the employer will have to state (and have it agreed) why they couldn't employ an existing Spaniard instead.
- An 'autonomo' visa, to be self-employed. For this, you will need a full business plan, evidence of contracts already in place, or pending; proof that you are qualified to do the work; proof of no criminal record; and also proof that you have enough money for you and your family to live on for a year, in case your business isn't successful. Each visa has to be renewed annually.
Unemployment in Spain is high, so there is a lot of competition for jobs; and wages / salaries in Spain are around 2/3rds of those in the UK. Being able to speak Spanish would also be necessary - even if you only do work for ex-pats, you need to be able to deal with permits, suppliers, tax, etc. in Spanish.
That said, there are lots of people who have done this and perhaps accept lower pay for the lifestyle benefits of living in Spain. If you look through several pages of this forum, you will see there are always requests for recommendations for tradesmen of all types.
Hope this helps!
