Hola All,

I'm looking for a really good private orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in knee replacements - preferably english speaking. In costa calida but also Alicante etc or even UK for right surgeon.  Can anyone help? I would also like to hear from anyone who has had this surgery to ask some q's regarding recovery times etc

Any info much appreciated, just pm me. Gracias

Hi, Hope you have got your knee sorted by now as this is an old post.

We have used Medimar Hospital (Vithas) in Alicante previously. Several departments - all very good.

For knees - Recommend Dr Antonio Calderón Arnedo - Traumatologia y cirugia Ortopédica. He does speak some english, they also have translators that will attend appointment if requested prior to appointment at no extra charge.

Do not recommend the other Alicante Vithas hospital (Socorro?)

Have Had a series of injections - own plateletes & hialuronic - which worked amazingly well on knee,.for a good period of time - to delay knee replacement - So this may be useful info for others.

Have not yet used this Dr for surgery but may well do in future.

I Would be very interested in any replacement knee surgery recommendations & experience from others & will update this post.

Worth noting.  We have found all medical staff & treatment in various different departments at Vithas Medimar Hospital to be excellent . Dr 's used are polite & very professional & qualified & all seem to be very up to date with latest treatment options & equipment. Many speak english.

However personally have ALWAYS found the administration department (the english speaking- admin - Not the male translator) to be exceptionally 'challenging' ie rude/agressive. Private hospital - their priority is €, but sadly there is a definite air of admin staff being the most important people in the hospital. It can be challenging to even make an appointment via administration. My recommendation is to not be put off, but endure the difficulties when trying to seek treatment here despite the admin staff.

Beware - Administration have a 'Hospital Policy' of witholding pathology results from the Dr's!

eg  A scheduled appointment became emergency non scheduled same day surgery.

Post-surgery appointment was scheduled days later. At the appointment the Dr firstly apologises, but he has to firstly send patient to find admin to retrieve surgery pathology report - (cancer)from them so that he can see report & plan appropriate treatment.

Patient then goes to find administration, & waits while they chat & prepare the invoice, & finally present it & demand full payment on the spot before releasing the pathology report. (Invoice is in thousands).

Administration would not accept sending bill to his medical insurance company - despite having all the insurance company details on file & prompt payment history by insurance company for several different previous surgeries over previous 2 years . Nor had they made any attempt to contact the patient or insurance company regarding payment prior to his Dr appointment. Attitude is very rude. ( this is very different to an understandable difference in language).

Administration have since had no problem sending his medical insurance company additional extra invoices - apparently also for the same surgery?

Complaints form requested in writing from Administration ignored.

This is sadly typical (though the worst) experience of administration attitude. They seem oblivious to the fact that they treat patients like this irrelevant of the level of pain they are in.

Again, Medical staff experience has always been good/excellent.

I would be interested in others experiences.
