I closed my Bankia bank account nearly 2 years ago & they kept trying to charge me for many months.

I had a letter confirming my account closure when I closed it in branch.

I just kept emailing them the account closure confirmation letter until finally they stopped contacting me.

Hi, thanks for info, that's not good, would put you off opening another account but needs must, thanks again

We closed our account in person in March 2019 even paying for the fees calculated to that day. This year we received a bill from them in each name for fees for 600€ and we are furious as now wish we had asked for confirmation in writing that we could prove it. We can't get into account and alth...

...ough we, ve just had a visit to Spain we did not even visit the branch. Hubby is adamant they can "get stuffed". Anyone closing account demand confirmation in writing as we asked would there be any more fees and agent said no. They are trying it on.

OMG thats shocking, a real put off for opening an account. Maybe we would be better getting the lawyer to close it for us, we would then have proof that it was closed. Thanks for info, very helpful.

Pauline, that’s terrible. I hope you get it sorted and don’t have to pay them anything.

I don't think ignoring them is very good advice to be honest.

It's the only way Spanish get the message.   I ignored the idiots at Orange and they finally stopped.

It was Sabadell bank. I know we should have gone to branch as revisited August to November but just didn't as hubby would have had a hissy fit in the bank. Haven't received anything else since. It was sent to our Spanish house last June (2020).

I hope that this was many years ago as it's more than possible that the bank will register any debt or supposed debt with the courts and a court order could allow the debt to be recovered from you one way or another via the embargo of your account for a period of up to 15 years, although 5 years is the usual amount of time. If you don't have another bank account, then they could make a claim on a vehicle or a property. Ignoring the situation will not make it go away and when they come to get their money, they will have gone through all the legal channels such as sending you registered letters or announcing your debt in the monthly list of debtors. Here's an article on the subject.

I got this from them but as I was visiting I booked an appointment and called within  10 mins so this is what they sent to me

With regard to your email,  to be able to close your bank account, the account must be at cero, any Sabadell insurances that are linked to the account must be cancelled and credit cards paid off, your id that you provided to us must be in date. If you have online banking, we will  be able  to assist you with your request, we would need to speak to you by telephone, if you would like to provide us with you telephone number including country code and a preferred contact time, or alternatively you can contact us on the details that follow.

And remember we're also available 24/7 by phone on 963 085 000, via email at [email protected] and on social networks (Twitter and Facebook).

In order to improve our service, we'd like to find out what you think about the attention you've received. Do you have a moment?
