Looks like some good news on the health front following negotiations with the EU pending our final departure ., see below

8. It looks like you might not need that new travel insurance after all

Both sides say the deal will preserve the rights of Brits abroad to get free healthcare in another European country, like they can under the European Health Insurance Card.

Until now, the UK had been advising its citizens to get healthcare because their needs might not be covered after January 1 when EHICs expire in the UK.

Indeed, as of Christmas Eve that was still the advice on the government’s website.

But a government summary said: "The Protocol will ensure necessary healthcare provisions – akin to those provided by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) scheme – continue.

“This means individuals who are temporarily staying in another country, for example a UK national who is in an EU Member State for a holiday, will have their necessary healthcare needs met for the period of their stay."

Obviously nothing final yet , but here is hoping !

Just received our new EHICs for health cover in other Euro countries. We don’t need them for the UK of course as expat pensioners with S1 are entitled to full NHS cover.

You should never rely solely on the EHIC card for travel insurance.

The vast majority of illnesses and accidents whilst travelling are minor - not needing major ops or evacuation flights. The EHIC simply ensures you get the same medical care as the residents of the country you are in. If you want private medical care you should look at travel insurance but be aware that there are many restrictions on what is covered, and can be very expensive for those with existing conditions. The EHIC is free.

The EHIC card treats minor ailments only.

I have travel insurance for the worst case scenario.

Air ambulance repatriation for major health problems can run into many many thousands of £'s.

I repeat: The EHIC covers you to receive the same medical treatment as people in the country you are visiting, from a tummy ache to a heart attack. Of course the standard of treatment will depend on how well that country treats its residents!

I wasn’t posting about Ehic, ( in its current form no longer available from jan 1st to the brits ) but perhaps it’s a distant cousins agreement , still to be agreed possibly appearing on the horizon.which has not be finalised as yet..

I repeat EHIC covers sweet FA as of jan 1st because it ceases to exist, ( for the British) as does our membership of the EU.

Why does this forum attract such negativity “ from I know best “ posters” ?

My original post was to spread a bit of possible good cheer, but as ever has been misconstrued by malicious posters responses.

@Richard10

Your statement in the above post is completely wrong

"I repeat EHIC covers sweet FA as of jan 1st because it ceases to exist, ( for the British) "

See the answer to number 5 in this link.

Hi Roland no they cover major as well. A friend here last year had a stroke and heart attack. He was hospitalised for over 3 months. Ehic covered it all. He didn't have to pay a cent. He received outstanding care and has made a full recovery and he is still enjoying his visits to camposol.

Hi Happy New Year

And if it turns bad then as I understand it there is a EHIC card by another name under the trade agreement with the EU, UK will provide to EU citizens and Eu will provide to UK citizens.

The cost being paid by the issuer of the EHIC/other card

Amazing a sensible agreement works for all
