These are great suggestions and because we have the same problem we took out everything that we inherited and out in a mixture of cactus, snake plant, ferns Seda and other types of easy to care for plants - you couldn't kill them. But we also added very realistic looking artificial shrubs to "fill out" the space. & add height etc. They look amazing and can be hosed down occasionally to deal with sand or dust.
There's a great selection in the various Chinese bazaars particularly the one beside Decathlon across from Dos Mares. It's a one off investment & you have trouble free foliage that looks really authentic.
A side benefit is that because there are so few things growing we have no ants or creepy crawlies in the garden either &, in fact, I spotted a small bird speculativily eyeing up an artificial bay tree with a view to nesting no doubt🤔😅 Another benefit is that the walls are kept cleaner with nothing growing up them. Throw in a few solar lights and you have a lovely atmospheric area to sit in.
Another idea would be to put in a Zen garden with rocks and sand and some ground lighting. Or do a bit of both if you have space
Best of luck with your search for a solution🌵🪴🌳☘️🌿
