Can anyone give advice on whether to use the toll roads or not going from here to Channel tunnel Calais. Also any recommendations for pet friendly hotels on route as we have a cat. We will be travelling at the end of June 2019 so not sure how busy the roads and hotels will be at this time of the year.

I've been driving to and from Spain for many year's and never used a toll road unless by accident, or once in Winter when I routed through Andora and used the toll tunnel at the top. These days the National roads are even better, plus you see more of the country. June isn't usually a problem either, but I have no experience of taking pets along.

I would suggest you decide how long each leg of the journey will suit you, and google the hotels around each way point. You have plenty of time to get it all sorted, and I hope you have a pleasant journey.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I was hoping this would be the case as the roads do not seem overly busy compared to the Uk

We haven't decided exactly what route we will take to Calais, we may even take the ferry from Dieppe to Newhaven as our final destination is Scotland we still have to fine tune our journey.

But not using the toll roads must add between 4-5hrs to the journey thru France?

I can normally get thru France to the Spanish border in about 9hrs from dieppe or a bit longer from Calais.

If you don’t use the toll roads how long does it take you to get to the Spain border?

I did this a few years back. It cost me about €170 in tolls, but was only slightly quicker than using ordinary roads. Also it seemed that motorways around towns and city's are toll-free so can be used avoid bottle-necks.

Agree with this, why pay tolls when the Nationals are so good?

I agree but I’d like to know how much longer it takes to get thru France if you use non toll roads?

I’m guessing an extra 4 hours?

So a 10hr trip from dieppe to the Spanish border would take 14hrs?

Is this about correct?
