There is a standing charge, although we don’t live there we get at least a 30 euro bill every month. There is an office you can go into, it’s in Pilar it’s an electrical shop begins with p and there’s an Iberdrola counter at the back, they’re very helpful if you have any queries, take a ticket when you go in.

Good luck

Thank you. Part of the bill is insurance?

So I am going to cancel that? Or is it necessary?

Electricity is expensive in Spain as all have said. I go online to read the itemized bill but confusing. Best if you go personally to one of Iberdrola offices( They actually do practice good customer service) You might even get a monthly  discount but even so our bill is still high. Oh well, everything else is way cheaper for us than in the US. No regrets at all.

Please, once done with your lawyers, remove their names from your bank account. The banks here don't first send a bill. They're charge machines!

Thank you for the advice. I am communicating with Iberdrola via email in English. I am quite impressed. Jaxquie

Your lawyer should have made sure that all the bills were in order and transferred into your name and set up for Direct debits from your bank.  Even your NIE can be obtained within a week or so which is needed to open a bank account.

I’ve just had my house upgraded and it’s not possible to just have double sockets put in without added electrical cable runs. It cost €2200 for a complete rewrite, extra sockets, all new switches and sockets and bill itemised to explain charges. Also included €200 for Ibderola for certificate.

Money can't be taken from your account without permission.  Usually when you sign up for utilities, including electricity, water etc. you sign a form giving the company permission to take the charges from your account.  You must have provided your account details at the time of signing up.

Yes, electricity is expensive in Spain but overall we find costs generally to be about one third less than Ireland/UK.  Lots of advantages to living here, don't despair!  You have much milder winters for one thing and absolutely lovely temperatures to enjoy as well as relatively cheap restaurant prices, good value for money.  Fuel for your car is significantly cheaper too.

These are just settling in matters common to everyone - don't worrry it will settler down and there is plenty of help out there.  It's not that different to any other country but the language can make it seem like that.  Officials generally are helpful and courteous and if they are not don't be afraid to complain .  You wouldn't put up with that back home so don't change the habit of a lifetime just because you are here.
