Hi there

We are travelling via the Shuttle from England for Christmas in our new house in San Pedro del Pinatar and wondered if anyone could advise the best route to take without paying for tolls. Google maps has 2 options: the first is via Madrid and is mainly inland when you reach Spain and the other is along the coast. The shortest route would be best and if you would be so kind and have travelled this route before, what would be the rough halfway mark to stop over for 1 night?

Thanking you in advance for you help :)

Sian and Paul

Using toll roads means safer driving, and lower fuel consumption and less wear and tear on the vehicle and the driver, plus a massive saving of time so less need for costly meal stops. I am constantly amazed at the lengths so many go to to try and save a few Euros.

Hi Peter

Thank you for your reply. By my investigations it's actually only 2-3 hours more than by using toll roads and the saving of a few euro's in GBP is £170 so the cost on fuel and wear and tear would be minimal as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure what you mean by safer though, so if you could explain we would be most grateful.

Best wishes,

Sian and Paul

Motorways are statistically the safest roads to use - no crossroads, slow tractors, roundabouts or traffic lights. Timings on A or B roads are notoriously unpredictable, with increased risk of other people's crashes causing trouble.

Of course it is down to personal preference, but I find the autovias more relaxing - set the cruise control and just concentrate on the traffic (which is all going the same way as me!)

Hi Peter

You had me worried there. I thought there might be bandits or something. I know that there can be scammers posing as police in France apparently, but I have my husband and dog with me and one or the other should put them off :)

Hi frannyb

Thank you for replying. We are concerned about the cost of tolls. Just want some advice on which route to take and where to stop off. Hopefully someone can let us know which is best.
thank you

Hi S&P, we did it in September & didn't relise about the clean air zone, so had to avoid it, & no way of purchasing whilst there (have it now, think she paid €4)

Anyway this put more milage on & it took us 2 night stop over to get to Los Alcazares, I enjoyed the roadtrip but & there is a but tolls have your pants down, no way of dressing it up, one was €45 cheeky France feckers I say.

On return we opted for ferry from Santander a great craic also.

Will I do it again, yes but will dodge them tolls, a few extra quid on fuel, & what's wear & tear, roads are as safe as you drive watching out for the bad drivers, which are plenty, too many in England - sharing driving licenses 🤔

Regards Paul D 😀

Sian and Paul,

I have been travelling by road from England to Spain and back regularly for the last 40 years.  Back in the 80`s, I used to drive the back roads.  At that time, the French and Spanish Motorway networks were less complete than they are now.

These days, I much prefer to use the Motorways.  It`s significantly easier and more relaxing and you can make much faster progress. It can be frustrating having to overtake slow-moving French traffic in a right hand drive car on country roads, but you can do 130 kph all day long on the Autoroute.

You can get a little gadget called an Emovis tag which allows you to drive through the toll booths without stopping.  The bill is then totalled and sent to you by email.  Add that into the mix and the Motorway is clearly the better option, especially since, at the time of year you are travelling, you are likely to be doing a fair bit of driving in the dark on unfamiliar roads.
