Hi all

We completed on our new property at the end of January and, like many others, haven't been able to come over and choose furniture.

The sofa i originally wanted is no longer available and my other choices are a mimimum of 14 weeks for delivery ( i am hoping to be there by then 😊). So, my question is, is it still viable to drive over and bring furniture with you, or use a delivery service? Or are the costs now involved too high to be worthwhile, post brexit.

Thanks for your help

We also recently completed on the purchase of a house and as we were in municipal lock-down in San Pedro del Pinatar and couldn't go shopping for furniture, we just bit the bullet and ordered an entire houseful of furniture, online from Ikea. Our order arrived the following day at exactly the time that they said it would and we were very happy with everything. Their sofas are really comfortable and good value for money. The website tells you if the items you want are in stock.

That’s probably what we will do as well. I have been waiting for the IKEA sofa I wanted to come back into stock, but have now been told that they won’t be getting it back in and I don’t like any of the others as much.

Hope you’re enjoying your new property.

We will be driving over and bringing all our own furniture and household belongings, clothes, etc.

With a one way hire van (very hard to find), it will be costing us in the region of £2000 in van hire, fuel, channel tunnel ticket and 2 x hotel stays. That compares favourably with removal company quotations which have been in the region of £4,500.

If you are only planning on moving a smaller volume of items, then I have seen positive references on this forum for Lords Removals, who will put small loads together to fill a van and appear to offer a reliable, cost-effective & regular service (only from what I have read on here, no personal knowledge).

So I guess it depends on whether you have furniture that can't be replaced elsewhere or is particularly valuable, whether it's worth moving it.

We also previously bought a bed for our property in Spain - we found the bed we wanted in a local DFS in the UK, were able to order it & pay for it there, but then it was delivered from the San Javier branch of DFS, so that's another potential option.

Hope this helps!

Thanks RichT, thats very helpful.

I'm planning on buying everything new, over there, but i'm very fussy about the sofa i want and had my heart set on one from ikea which, i've been told, is no longer available. I found an alternative in DFS San Javier, but there is a 14 week wait for it. I might have to get some beanbags to sit on in the meantime 😊

I agree with crissywissy, wait till you get here. I think especially sofas etc need be sat on before buying. Great shop at the campomoar/caboroig end, HACO. Family owned by Dutch people and nearly all furniture from Holland much of it made to order. A lady called Tamara is very helpful and anything she can do, she will do. Over the years we have had several things from them and 2 arm chairs we got for a sun lounge about 6 years ago are still like new and we use them a lot. I know that at least Spanish, English and Dutch are spoken. They have certain things in stock but otherwise its worth the wait. We are having a sofa and armchair, an easy chair, a recovered pouffe and a small set of drawers delivered next Tuesday. They are not at the cheaper end of the market, but they are definitely worth paying that little bit more for and for the service

Do you know if DFS in San Javier will deliver to our home in France as I think it may be a cheaper option than having one delivered from UK. Thanks.
