Good afternoon,

Whilst in Spain in early March I renewed my car Insurance for another year and left the country early due to the travel situation and the advice of the airline.

Today I sent an Email to the Insurance company to either cancel the policy or preferably freeze the policy  until next year  ???.

I was advised that neither was possible due to Spanish Law requiring cars to be insured at all times even if stored in a garage or private land.

Can anyone throw any light on this situation (It is several hundred Euros).

Many Thanks again.

Unfortunately I understand this is correct in Spain.

In the flooding last Sept, my car was under 10 metres of water in our underground garage for over a month. Eventually it was towed to a yard for inspection (100% certain to be written off) however I was advised that despite it not being driveable, it still had to have insurance until the inspector formally wrote it off. (which was done in January, some 4 months later!)

I did reduce from fully comprehensive to 3rd party, but insurance still required. Total waste of money! (however was advised that there was a potential 3,000 euro fine awaiting if no insurance!)

As an aside, I have just received bill for car tax and have been advised, that as the car was not written off until 12 January 2020, I will probably have to pay that as well.

This is correct.

Your car could (say) develop an electrical fault and catch fire, causing damage to other property; there is potential for liability claims.

Hi, Actually when you think about it, it is obvious you must keep your car insured, even if you are not using it currently. Just think, would you cancel your home and contents insurance whilst you were absent?
