No Residence Tax

This is Spain, they do what they want. In the UK many Councils charge either the full amount of council tax or more for holiday homes left empty for most of the year at locations where the locals can't afford property.

Foreigners owning property in UK do pay Tax and council tax, which is higher than Spain. Council tax in UK is in the thousands per year whereby Spain is only in the very low hundreds.

I am not referring to council tax but the non residents tax. That does not apply in the UK to Spanish or other nationals who own property in the UK.

I too agree with you Chris, its an unfair tax, to charge people a tax just because "they could have rented it out and gained an income if they had wanted" is just so illogical. We all pay Ibi so you,re not referring to council tax and you,re right residents don't pay it. Its just another way Spain gets more money and yes nonresidents in UK wouldnt pay in the UK. I dread to imagine what Brexit will cause tthis charge to be increased when we,re out of the EU. I also dont know why someone hasnt taken this before to the courts of unfair legislation or whoever it is who deals with this type of injustice.

Thank you for your response. I suspect it hasn't been challenged in the courts (to my knowledge) because the amount of tax is relatively small. However it is wrong that when there is meant to be parity between EU member states that Spain can do this.  

Yes Chris a small amount for each person(though its still in the hundreds per year) but imagine how much it generates in total and because it hasnt been challenged and possibly abolished, the consequences are we will probably be charged at a higher rate after Brexit and have less of a lever to have it abolished as we will not be complaining as an EU country. Had someone organised a petition to abolish this earlier the other non residents from non EU countries would have gained too. Spain will definitely up this revenue with glee

I have just thought of this. If you are a Spanish but not resident in Spain but own a property there would you have to pay the non residents tax?

I too wondered about that, if you applied for residency because you were  staying over the 3mnths but under 6 so not becoming a tax resident would non resident tax still apply? Hope someone can answer this.

How do you know that? No one knows what will happen if we ever leave this bureaucratic bunch of unelected people who have taken over our lives. Unfortunately Mrs May and her cronies are doing their best to scupper democracy! Unlike Britain, Spain and France have never followed all the EU rules, they choose the ones that suit them and ignore the rest.

Everything we hear via the media is pure speculation, and the so-called experts have got all their forecasts wrong so far. Best thing is to chill out and accept what comes. Personally, I don't think Spain dare upset the Brits....tourism is a vital sector of their economy.
