We bought a house here end of last year. At the moment it's just a holiday home. We hope to move here permanently when DH retires. We love it here. I've been over 5 times this year. Twice for a whole month. I'm here now.  We cycle and walk everywhere as it is so flat. It is quiet (apart from july/august when it's fairly busy) but we like quiet.

Thanks lv, sounds great we really want to leave the uk and  have a relaxing retirement. Can I  be cheeky and ask things like council tax gas elec are they cheaper in spain.                                                                                                                             In Santiago de la Ribera is there a doctors surgery also a vet. Can you walk the dogs on the beach at anytime or are there lovely walks we can take them on.              Sorry for going on                                                                                                       Take care                                                                                                                       Vivien & Paul

Hi

I agree with what has been said about La Ribera it is a small town with all the amenities you could require, of course depending on where you buy.

Our property is a short walk to the beach and all the shops for everyday living plus Medical center and 2 chemists and of course many restaurants and bars.

The only thing you must remember is that in the winter it is much quieter as you will see when visiting in January and March, although there is always something going on somewhere.

In answer to your questions the equivalent council tax would depend on your property, if buying an apartment or maybe on an urbanization with swimming pool you will have community charges and these will, of course, depend on the property administrators. For example, if you by a property that is what in the UK is called pebble dash you may pay more because it tends to need more attention than brick built.

Our average water bill is about 45 euro every 2 months electricity is monthly and ranges from 29 euro to 39 in August but again depends on usage.

There are many Vets 2 in La Ribera plenty of walks for dogs but they are not allowed on the beaches although saying this I have seen people taking them on the beaches. I respect the Spanish law and do not take mine on the beach.

I have lived in many regions of Spain and my wife is Spanish and enjoy the area very much.

Take your time there are many bargains to be had and not always with estate agents.

Hope thia helps

Kind regards

Ed

Hi. Totally agree with all the replies. We bought in January with a view to retiring here within next few years.

We love the area. The people we have met have all been very friendly and helpful. We cycle and walk everywhere. Using public transport to travel further. Aldi, Lidl and Mercadona alongside Spar and smaller supermarkets. Lots of lovely restaurants and bars.

Still finding our way around, Learning basic Spanish and having fun. Get involved in the local community. A good way to meet people. We love our time here and hope to spend many happy years in Santiago de la Ribera.

Go for it!!!
