Does anyone have a definitive answer to; do we need tests 72 hours before departure (we will leave on the Santander-Portsmouth 24hr ferry). Or is it 72hours before arrival in the UK? Websites are being unclear and of course it makes a 24 hour difference on date of tests

The key phrase is "You must take the test in the 3 days before the service on which you will arrive in England departs."

You will also need to self-isolate for 10 days on arrival at wherever you are staying and also pre-book the Day 2 & Day 8 PCR tests (approx. £210 per person).
