We are moving over to Santiago de la Ribera at the end of this year however our house is currently under construction and will not be complete until sometime in Feb. We shall be renting in between times. We have looked at hiring a car during this time but are taken aback how much we’ve been quoted (tried a few companies) so would prefer to buy a car ASAP - BUT is this possible without having a permanent address? Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you do need a permanent address or a rental lease for a year minimum. We were in a similar position in April ie renting and having to hire a car to go round viewing property. Tried to buy but got told then not possible as the car has to be registered to an address and then should you need to change it then it is complicated and takes forever apparently  I sympathise but wish you all the best

It took a few seconds in the Ayuntamiento to change our car address to Los Alcazares from Malaga, so cannot see why changing it within the same province or city should present any difficulty - just needed a current padron, and there was no fee (the council being only too happy to have the income from the road tax!).

Just shows you can’t always go by what people tell you!

Maybe you could buy a left hand drive car at home and bring it to Spain  You have 6 months before you have to register it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. sean

Hi, if buying a car is out of the question then I'd consider hiring one......my experience is that car hire can be very cheap in the winter months, maybe what you need to do is check out the price of hiring for a couple or three weeks at a time....it can work out considerably cheaper than quotes for significantly longer periods of time....it may mean having lots of short hire periods and trips to the airport to return/pick up but if it's cost effective then why not......

Good advice . Can you recommend a good hire company?

My car hire experience from Alicante airport has in the main been with Firefly and RecordGo.......my upcoming rental is with Goldcar and fingers crossed it's as good an experience as the other 2.

I have hired small cars for 16, 17 and 18 day periods for as little as €15, my 9 day car hire with Goldcar, is a Nissan Juke at less than €9 for the entire rental...I find out of season car hire very affordable. I found this rental on DoYouSpain.....I have my own excess car hire insurance which costs around €/£50 for the year.

My advice is get the full to full fuel option and for handiness pickup in airport....only other thing to be mindful of is if there is limited mileage with the rental.

Always check the car before leaving the airport and take plenty of photos but more importantly ensure you get back to the airport on time to have someone from the hire company check over the car, the best thing is to get the all clear from the company while you are there with them.....failing to do so could end up in your card being debited a few days later for something they say is wrong.

Good luck.
