Today we were sat in our usual spot on the beach in Santiago de la Ribera anyway met a loverly family here about 8 of them with a Down syndrome son the mother about 87 and daughters etc and friends

Anyway about 2:30-2:45 wenall went to the chirrenuata (beach bar) we use every day and always have

Opposite the fish Restuarante anyway they were in there table my husband and I on another and a lady about 25-30 who was pregnant sat in the table between us she was Spanish looking but spoke a little English she was with 2 men one about 30 and other about 25 they all had kids lollyices and sat there she the pregnant lady suddenly stood up as if she was taking pictures in the middle of us and my husband felt antap on his shorts pocket, well 2 times it happened and he turned around as she said oh sorry I am taking pictures

I looked up and said oh dear have you broken the screen as it was all cracked she laughed and said it's ok and I said oh not an I phone and she replied no no

It was a white Samsung phone my husband said

Anyway the lad about 30 dark hair and had a stick a walking cane a dark one he pushed the handbag nxt to him around I just assumed it was there's

The lady was making everyone look at her with her camera to us we all thought ah he is disabled she is pregnant and there taking pics on holiday well NO... as within seconds they were gone

Along with the I phone wallet purse and car keys from my friends who we had met bag.....

He partner realised amd chased after them as she did very fast along the promenade as far as the marina at the other end but nothing they were gone.....

We weee all gobsmacked and outraged and in shock st what had just occurred the lad was disabled and stated to get very upset and crying so we had to play it down somewhat...

The bar staff were amazing called the police and helped them and described them but I am posting this to warn every one of you please please please share this post

Be aware

Be careful

They looked like a. It also holiday couple of friends and relaxing

But no they were scammers and theifs

They must go around doing it

If I for one minute had of realised what he with the stick was doing I would have stopped him or shouted out loud but I just thought it was there bag,

She was not in our opinion even pregnant we thinks that's a decoy as well....

They were very fast and gone probably had a car up a side street or a lift.....

It was awful and it has spoilt there holiday there lovely family no cards no phone all there money around 200€ gone I'm so upset for them

But please please please be careful be warned

As this is really bad and do t get scammed or robbed like these today I am still in shock

Take care everyone x

Thank you for warning us all.

Unfortunately the world over there are scams and thiefs and IT IS THEIR JOB.!!!  They practice it sorry to say.  I even guessed as I was reading your message that the 'pregnant' one wasn't even 'pregnant' and the disabled guy (gosh I might be not correct here) all part of their ploy and act.

What we have got to realize is that there are always people here in Spain that will not be as affluent as others and they will never be able to afford trappings like I-phones etc.

One thing I do is have almost like a security blanket.  I don't put my phone etc just in my bag.  I put what is absolutely important to me e.g. keys, phone, purse inside a plastic carrier bag. That carrier bag then goes inside my shopping bag.  I try to be mindful also as I walk along that my hand is on my zip of the bag.

I saw mention a few weeks ago that when there was a bag snatch that someone had a 'bell' attached to the zip.  I'm afraid we all have to be ahead of the game of these scum.

Another idea is to buy a money belt and split your money.  There are other ways too of not having your goods all in one place ready for the taking.

I do appreciate that men don't normally carry Bags like ladies do but you can buy 'man bags' to be worn over the neck and shoulders.

So so sorry for what your friends have endured.  It makes you feel quite unwell.

Thank you very much for posting this.

These decoy thefts are horrible but people need to be aware at all times.  I have always felt very safe and relaxed at the beach you mentioned but we cannot be too careful even in such a beautiful setting.

Hope you and your friends were not too upset.

Hi thanks for the reply

Yes it was awful

Her wallet was handed in to a hotel and it had the card in of  there hotel they were staying at, so that hotel the Venezuela I think they said it was called there hotel the Neptune and obviously asked were (*******) staying there and the owner said yes and they got the cards and car keys back which was a relief as anyone of of who have ever lost /had stolen or misplaced know c cards are a nightmare and drivers licence to cancel etc but they got them all back

but the money and mobile phone were still stolen😧

I told them not to run after the culprits but they did and when they got back I said that was dangerous these people will do anything to protect themselves so please everyone if this was to happen to you call the police and please dont attempt to go after them as would not want anyone of you hurt!

Just all be careful and take little items with you and if you have to them take the money in a coat /strap bag....

bag or waterproof bag and keep on you  if we all stay alert and keep items on us to a minimal then these thieves wont get much or anything

Take care everyone it's still a beautiful place and a fantastic beach bar with Maria and her family and staff, costa pinada Santiago de la riberia...

and beautiful places enjoy .... be alert and have fun xxx
