Looking at areas in the Mar Menor to purchase property for retirement .we have visited a few areas around the Mar Menor but never SDLR ! What makes this town popular with expats ?how far is the nearest airport , medical centres ,hospitals etc mbasic amenities ,ie for food shopping and are they open all year round ?

SDLR is a small town with basic amenities, banks, chemist, doctor, vets, bars and restaurants, a new hospital on the outskirts of San Javier some 6/7 klm and a good variety of supermarkets available locally. In San Javier which is 3 klm from SDLR you will find furniture and DIY shops. You will find everything you need within the locality.

Currently the closest airport is San Javier at 3 klm however this is closing at the end of this year and Corvera airport opening at the beginning of next year, right now there are limited flights in/out of Corvera however everyone is hoping this improves, Corvera is approx 30 mins from Santiago de la Ribera. Alicante is the next closest airport at 1 hour drive north of SDLR, it's a pretty straightforward drive south even for a novice.

SDLR has a lovely promenade and like all promenades in the busier months has  lots of places to eat and drink as well as festivals and entertainment on the beach. It is quieter from Oct through to April.

We bought a house here 2 years ago and love it. We are less than a 10 min walk from the promenade and all that the town centre has to offer. I would advise that if possible you try to find a property that is 10/15 max walk from the prom as it makes getting home after a glass of local wine and tapas more manageable...
