Hi first post so here goes. We are coming over to Santiago de la ribera in Feb next year for 3 months to see if we can live in Spain. Going to rent in San Blas area if the estate agent gets back to us (it certainly seems a manana moment). We think its a 15 min walk to beach and aldi/lidl which would be superb. Are there many expats in the area, which restaurants are open all year round, can you hire bikes? i suppose i have lots more questoins so feel free to help in any way you think would make our move fantastic. thanks in advance

First lesson in Spanish ways...yesterday was a national holiday. As it was a Thursday many people and firms will make it a 'puente' or 'bridge' and stay closed on the Friday, then the weekend....opening again on Monday.

San Blas has lots of expats and in Ribera generally. Unless youre a fast walker its probably a bit more than 15 mins to the beach but is nearer to Lidl and Aldi. Most of the beach kiosks and restaurants close in the winter but there are lots of others...some good Spanish ones. You really will need a car if you want to explore the area. San Javier is very Spanish not touristy at all but lots going on...pm me if you want any info.

Hi Fran. We thought Spain was fantastic a d currently selling up in UK to move permanently. Renting our UK house was no good for us as still got mortgage. Eventually rented in los alcázares and everything good so far. We are long-term renting just to make sure we have the area right but so far so good. Might even rent forever but who knows. Certainly rent to start as there are many great areas along this coast. You might not find anything until September for long term as owners get loads of money during summer. Watch renting before viewing. We had terrible experience with rainbow properties and went with mar menor lets in the end. Good luck with your move and enjoy. Its superb

Check your tax implications if you keep a UK property. If it is worth over €50000 (lol...”if”) you must declare it on Form 720, and you could be liable for Spanish tax on the rental income. Once Brexit happens and the UK is no longer an EU member lots of things like tax coukd change.

thanks for getting back to me, I'm really trying to get as much advice as possible. we'll be renting our house out in the UK and rent in Spain we have a small mortgage but initially thats the plan as we have a 5 yr old son and want to make sure its right for him. Would you recommend The area for families thats the drive for our move, we really want a safer environment and more outdoor living for our family. my partner works all over the world- at times ill be alone with my son we need to make sure its the right location.
Ive noticed there's a lot of negative comments on here about moving to Spain, kind of puts the doubt in or fear. we've wanted to move out for yrs but always something gets in the way ,however, we are planning now and researching so anything you have found in your experience out there will be much appreciated.
Thanks Fran

Thanks for that, but its the only way we can come over initially is to rent and make sure its the right thing for our family. rent for a couple yrs then maybe sell up but rather that then have regrets
Any advice welcome we really want to get it right so as much feedback please
thanks Fran
