Super helpful member
"We are looking for god" - best of luck with that....seriously, depends on what you like to do at your destination: you can leave a caravan parked on the site and go off in your car, with easier parking and driving in traffic, or of you tend to stay on each site you simply pull up in the motorhome. You may want to check on comparitive costs in ferries. We have a static in the UK, plus a rhd car and find that very comfortable.

Ray, hope this helps, but bare in mind I'm not In Spain yet but have towed abroad, don't let that worry you though!
Had a camper van in past but now have a large twin axle caravan. In short, I prefer towing my van by far.
Initial and on-going costs much less, no tax, expensive annual insurance (a lot less) and MOT. Maintenance much less. Although I'm towing a big caravan, you get used to it and it's less stressful with experience. Once on site, pitch up, awning up barbie on, relax. Freedom to tour in the car and leave the van and awning where it is, ready for your return in the evening to luxury.
A camper van is great for one night stays at multiple camp sites when touring. Problems and inconvenience arise if you extend your stay, you have to pack up every time you need to make local journeys if your awning is fixed to the camper van. Can also be a pain looking for parking space at the shops etc.
The caravan is usually more spacious and these days fitted with all the mod cons.
Whichever you pick, take a bit of time out to get to know your new outfit, Including reversing. I'd suggest you visit a local and quiet site to begin with, it'll give you the chance to get used to it without too much stress.
Get as big a van as you can afford, remember it needs to be parked somewhere when not in use.
Join the caravan club, you'll save loads on pitch fees!
On every site, someone will be peeping round the curtains watching you reverse, wave and smile 😃.
Hope this helps you decide.

Thanks Zacdog. As a former international 35tonner artic driver with experience in both heavy haulage and also groupage freight and also having owned a 1tonne trailer personally towing is not the issue however I thank you for your additional input and leans me more and more towards a caravan for all the valuable information you have stated here.
cheers

Hi
i agree with the above, however if you are living in spain , the caravan would have to be registered in its own capacity. i havent looked into it too much , but it is something to check,

I'm the same cannot make my mind up. On the plus side with all this Covid You will probably make a profit if you change your mind and sell. Wish now I had bought pre-covid prices were a lot cheaper. As for searching for god you have got me watching that sit-com waiting for god on YouTube hilarious!!!

Thanks Mick. Yes typing never was my strong point. 🤣
Hello Ray,
I have caravaned for 40 years but last year spent a month touring S. Africa in a motor home. Your other replies outline the advantages of the caravan well. However I found the driving of the motor home so much more relaxing. Being able to pull off main roads with ease and explore or stop at small roadside cafes/restaurants was a huge bonus which contributed to achieving much greater daily distances far easier. In short if you plan to actively tour Europe or beyond I would definitely consider a motor home. I wish I had.
