Can anyone help please

I just booked to hire a car in January and the best rat4e I got was from DoYouSpain

The car to hire was only €60 for 25 days but it also mentioned a Platinum insurance to give me 'peace of mind'  so I thought I'd take that as well  - the total was €187 which I thought quite reasonable

However when the documentation came through it said I had to pay €950 deposit against 'damage'   well if I have the car for 25 days and it gets a little scratch am I liable and then lose my €950?  so i cancelled the car

and now trying to find something as reasonable as the €60

a friend told me he just pays the extra insurance to the car hire company - this particular one was Dickmann and had terrible reviews

so any help/ advice/ recommendations  would be greatly appreciated

thank you

Hi,

I,ve used car hire Co,s for 10yrs+ and they're all differrent conditions. Some actually lodge the security deposit against card and some just put a hold on deposit but dont actually charge. We mostly use Record or Goldcar who just put a hold on card.I cant praise enough a Co. called Hire car insurance 4 you,( look on google), They charge just £39.99 for a yearly insurance to cover excess on car hire( covers damage and theft, and amazingly even if you are a passenger in a hire car not just the driver.Well this year I had to claim for an idiot who smashed into the mirror and scraping car door whilst parked, then driving off. They were brilliant, They emailed the claim form immediately I got back home, and within 10days I had reimbursement into my bank for full damage cost of 511€.We go at least 4 times a yr hiring car each time and I have, full piece of mind now I am covered for any happenning. This yr we also used Firefly whose cost for 28 days was an unbeatable 39€ and a "holding" deposit of 1000€ but we were dubious as I'd heard some bad stories.Well they too exceeded my expectations, first I got there with no driving licence,"Horror"( left in my sons printer from him printing a copy to claim for accident previous as mentioned ,just month before). They gave me tel no of Swansea and Swansea sent an email to Firefly to confirm licence. It did all take 2hrs waiting but thankfully I got car ok and no mishaps this visit and no charge to car or waiting for refund of deposit.

To conclude, every company will demand a security deposit either charged to credit card or held pending, you must always read their conditions. This way they have funds to that amount for any damage/theft.They will only charge their cost of repair (which I can say is overinflated). However you either get differrence back if charged initially, or they just charge the amount on return. They are trusting you with on average a 10,000€ vehicle after all.In conclusion just go for best price and cover yourself with carhire4you insurance and if necessaey as deposits are now 1000€ approx get a raise of limit on credit card so you still have plenty to spend, if necessary. Hope this helps

Pauline.

We have just used a company at Alicante airport called Drivealia, they are brilliant, we took their extra insurance, with this you leave no deposit and are completely covered and not reliable for any excess, our car was broken into but the company could not have been more helpful and sympathetic, we were supplied with another car within hours, hope this helps. thank you; I'll look them up;  might be a problem if they're only based at Alicante though as my nearest airport is Murcia (10 minutes away)   but thanks for the info

If you take the carhire4you insurance beforehand you wont need to pay the carhire company,s extra ins. The deposit will either be charged( sometimes waiting a while before refunding or it will just be blocked but not charged, this depends on which company you use).As we go 3/4 times for a month or more the carhires extra ins.mounts up to a huge amount(1000€ approx over year) hence the carhire4you saves you a fortune over the years.Total piece of mind paying extra ins fee is a ripoff, but if thats what you want pay for it and there should be no need to pay a security deposit as well.

Btw, if I,d acted on some bad firefly reviews I would not have experienced a good response in November when I used them so it pays to realise, not everyone reviews good experiences(we accept them as standard) but sure as hell voice off about a bad one.
