We bought in San Pedro del Pinatar just over two years ago and love it l. We spend a lot of our time there. It's not so much a holiday town ,more a year round place with all the amenities etc that you get with that. There are holiday places there and a fabulous beach, in fact a number of beaches both on the Mar Menor and the Med. Plenty of nice walks and a lovely cycling area too. It's not overtly a holiday destination and while there are plenty of ex pat's we find it's not as overrun with them as some places close by - it still feels very much a Spanish town and even in Sumner a lot of the holidaymakers come from Madrid and Murcia city which helps the feel of an authentic Spanish town. Plenty of English spoken and very dog friendly.
There are quite a few ex pat's living there. I don't know your age group but what we like is that it's relatively quiet & very low crime - it tends to be opportunistic Crime and it's generally very safe.
Restaurants are plentiful both from the low end right through to the top end although you may have to travel a bit for more choices. We all have our own range of personal tastes but within 20 mins or so you can find all the cuisines from Asia, European and of course typical Spanish fare. A good mix and all within easy reach.
If you are interested in sport there is tennis, golf nearby and just about anything you fancy in that area.
In the winter some restaurants do close down but all the usual shops etc remain open all year and just 20 mins. away you have Torrevieja which has a huge shopping center, La Zenia Boulevard. Torrevieja is open all year round but personally while I go there for shopping and like to visit some restaurants there it's not for us as a place to live in. We prefer the pace of life in San P.
Downsides, not many tbh. It has all the supermarkets a town of 20K+ can support. The winter usually kicks in from about mid Nov on. A bit chilly then but no frost and it's never harsh. You will need your heating from mid Nov through to end March/mid April but the days are often sunny and very comfortable apart from the cold breeze off the Mar Menor.
The people are lovely, very friendly and helpful. We find we can do everything we need to do and it's a great base from which to access other places if interest. We drove to both Granada and Málaga and didn't find it too long.
Officialdom is manageable but, as is common in many southern European countries, the bureaucracy is evident but as I said it is manageable..
That's pretty much it, without knowing your personal preferences U can't say much more. Oh yes and it's a good base for airports too, Alicante is less than an hour, Murcia International us 35 mins although not many flights in winter so far. Valencia is another option but it's about 2/2.5 hrs. drive.
If you want to ask me any specific questions I'll be happy to try and answer them if I can. Good luck with your search😊
