Hi,

I'm after advice on the best way to get a small(ish) parcel from the UK (East Mids) to the Costa Calida. It's a pair of gas struts for my car boot which won't be allowed on the plane, either in the cabin or hold. Looking at parcel compare sites it's going to cost about £18 to send them. However, I didn't know if anyone knows of people doing regular runs in vans, etc? I'm happy to travel a little bit at each end, so doesn't need to be door to door.

Thanks in advance....

Because of Brexit and the paperwork needed, the days of many people doing "runs" have disappeared. Don't forget you will now be paying tax/duty on the importation into Spain as well as the transport costs.

Please can you explain costs to me. A friend in the U.K. sent me a calendar if Nirth Yorkshire. She declared this on customs label with a cost of £1.50p. The postage was £5.25p total £6.75p. In Spain I received notification of package to collect from Correos, Fuente Alamo, arrived and had to pay £5.90p, why? I wasn’t given any opportunity to refuse the package as it wasn’t produced until I paid the £5.90p. I am totally bewildered by these charges.

The lesson is simply only buy or receive items from within the EU. Anything else is open to unpredictable taxes and charges.

I wish I knew somewhere in the EU that would send me a calendar of North Yorkshire!

Well I am going to make a guess that they are charging duty on the "Value" of the calendar, being the total cost, postage and VAT as calculated in Spain all added together. Then there will be a Customs handling charge by Correos.

So a £1.50 calendar plus postage of £5.25 totalling £6.75 is then virtually  doubled to make total payable 5.90 euros, doesn’t make sense.

£1.50 plus £5.25, then add VAT onto that (say 20%) totals £8.00. They will then charge duty on that (say 20% as well)....... so you are paying VAT of £1.35 Duty of £1.60 and a Customs clearance charge upon importation of around £3.00. Surely you paid Euro 5.90 which would be £4.95 at today's rate?
